Thanks. When looking at Arquebus X's videos on Elite: Dangerous it looks like I'm going to enjoy Oolite more than Elite. Oolite is much more true to the spirit of the original while Elite: Dangerous seems to make everything unnecessary complicated.

After a few years away I have returned to fly the cosmos and start my trading career again. Only I've switched from Windows to MacOs and things have changed quite a bit with Oolite. After some initial hiccups I've managed to get it installed and working. Am I right in thinking that the macOs version needs a bit of work?

Anyway, my thanks to all the people who contribute.

Welcome back!

The main issue with the AppleMac is the sound cutting out. It’s been an issue since 2013 or earlier. The developing issue with the AppleMac will be the inability to upgrade to Oolite v.1.92 - but since we’re not there yet…

The macOS port is effectively no longer supported due to lack of maintainers and Apple's lack of interest in supporting OpenGL any further. The best one can hope for right now is a bug fix or two for v1.90.

Whenever (if) we get maintainers for the mac port again, there will be a lot of work to catch up to the other two ports. In this page (click "Oolite on the bleeding edge") you can see how much the game has changed since the last version that supported Macs about 4.5 years ago.

Sorry? At the moment v.1.90 is the official recommended version - and it is for the AppleMac as well as Windows & Linux.

Or is our official website’s download page wrong?

Yes, v1.90 is still the latest official version. But development has not ended at v1.90 and the current Windows and Linux ports are already way, way ahead of what 1.90 used to be. This is why I would now (unofficially) recommend 1.91 over 1.90 for Win/Linux - it brings 4.5 years' worth of additional features and fixes. Unfortunately, as it currently stands, the macOS port will not see those. That's what I mean by "no longer supported".

So? Now that you've had a couple of months to experiment, what do you think?

Was it the most dreadful mistake you ever made in your life? Does the Oolite grind make that of E:D seem easy-peasy? Did you discover any OXPs which you felt really improved things?

Hello everyone, nice to be here

I decided to drop by and say hello as I've been playing Oolite on and off now for ages (mostly off, to tell the truth). I forget when exactly, but pre-shaders, pre javascript. After a particularly long break though, I'm back with a brand new Cobra and working through an attempt to visit every world in at least the first galaxy.

I've stocked up on a load of ambience and mission OXPs, thanks to phkb's excellent lists of recommendations. Nothing that changes gameplay much although Commies and Feudal States look interesting.

Back in the old, old days I played the original Acornsoft Elite on a BBC Micro. Never achieved a rank higher than Dangerous -- my preferred style of play has always been "run away, run away now". But I could dock properly, which marked me as a god among men (well, among 12-year-olds).
So how goes it? Have you gotten anywhere yet? Or merely got absorbed by the wonderful world of The Dark Side?

Hey new here on the forum.
I saw you just dropped by!

I've sent you a PM with recent news about Oolite which should hopefully be useful.

To be honest, life got in the way. I've had little time to play it sadly.

Greetings to all denizens of the 8 charts!

Been a long-time lurker here and a sporadic Ooliter since 2014 or thereabouts. Apart from MS FS9, Oolite is the only 'game' that consistently keeps me returning to it. That's some feat on the part of the developers, and so finally I express my thanks and appreciation to all who keep the Oolite cogs spinning and well-oiled... Long may this wondrous enterprise continue to flourish.

(Elite Dangerous: pfah, give me none of it - it's no computer game, but Oolite is, thank God.)
With your latest vignette (The Bond) I've added your Elite Trader page to https://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/List_ ... te_stories.

I'm curious about your playing. Do you play with New Cargoes? And/or with Smugglers?

Many thanks for that, Chol :)

Actually, I play only with my own OXPs - I have created a few new ones, but not yet uploaded them: another Escort Service called 'Bigger Friends' (robot-piloted Constrictors this time! - more costly to hire and maintain); an offshoot of Elite Trader called Merchanter's League - which gives you the option to accept Guild-style perks, and has no strictures whatsoever against combat or killing (per Contratius Phlebor, whose splinter Order it is); and finally Merchant's Measure, a progress tracker for pure Guild-despising traders, with no ranks or grades.... this last designed to be played in 'vanilla Oolite' mode without FE Ships etc.

Now I have the Escorts primed I am looking for an OXP that spawns more and meaner pirates, just so I can watch the escorts and Auto-SOS 'hens' battle them ;)

I'm really not into shooting, primarily because I have no working joystick and, manoeuvring using the arrow keys, it is nigh impossible to line up properly for a 'kill' as the miscreants just jink and jive too much.

As to cargo, I am using the space-upgrades Cargo Space Refit, Auxiliary Pylon, plus my pods and containers of various sizes. More Moolah Market too (I no longer play Oolite with the standard market goods and prices!)

Having great fun with all this.... can't think why I left it alone for all of three years. So good to be back!
Dor 'call me Grocer' Reval (a Xexedian Laver) was always considered a little backward.
