Thanks. When looking at Arquebus X's videos on Elite: Dangerous it looks like I'm going to enjoy Oolite more than Elite. Oolite is much more true to the spirit of the original while Elite: Dangerous seems to make everything unnecessary complicated.

After a few years away I have returned to fly the cosmos and start my trading career again. Only I've switched from Windows to MacOs and things have changed quite a bit with Oolite. After some initial hiccups I've managed to get it installed and working. Am I right in thinking that the macOs version needs a bit of work?

Anyway, my thanks to all the people who contribute.

Welcome back!

The main issue with the AppleMac is the sound cutting out. It’s been an issue since 2013 or earlier. The developing issue with the AppleMac will be the inability to upgrade to Oolite v.1.92 - but since we’re not there yet…

The macOS port is effectively no longer supported due to lack of maintainers and Apple's lack of interest in supporting OpenGL any further. The best one can hope for right now is a bug fix or two for v1.90.

Whenever (if) we get maintainers for the mac port again, there will be a lot of work to catch up to the other two ports. In this page (click "Oolite on the bleeding edge") you can see how much the game has changed since the last version that supported Macs about 4.5 years ago.

Sorry? At the moment v.1.90 is the official recommended version - and it is for the AppleMac as well as Windows & Linux.

Or is our official website’s download page wrong?

Yes, v1.90 is still the latest official version. But development has not ended at v1.90 and the current Windows and Linux ports are already way, way ahead of what 1.90 used to be. This is why I would now (unofficially) recommend 1.91 over 1.90 for Win/Linux - it brings 4.5 years' worth of additional features and fixes. Unfortunately, as it currently stands, the macOS port will not see those. That's what I mean by "no longer supported".

So? Now that you've had a couple of months to experiment, what do you think?

Was it the most dreadful mistake you ever made in your life? Does the Oolite grind make that of E:D seem easy-peasy? Did you discover any OXPs which you felt really improved things?

Hello everyone, nice to be here

I decided to drop by and say hello as I've been playing Oolite on and off now for ages (mostly off, to tell the truth). I forget when exactly, but pre-shaders, pre javascript. After a particularly long break though, I'm back with a brand new Cobra and working through an attempt to visit every world in at least the first galaxy.

I've stocked up on a load of ambience and mission OXPs, thanks to phkb's excellent lists of recommendations. Nothing that changes gameplay much although Commies and Feudal States look interesting.

Back in the old, old days I played the original Acornsoft Elite on a BBC Micro. Never achieved a rank higher than Dangerous -- my preferred style of play has always been "run away, run away now". But I could dock properly, which marked me as a god among men (well, among 12-year-olds).
So how goes it? Have you gotten anywhere yet? Or merely got absorbed by the wonderful world of The Dark Side?

Hey new here on the forum.
I saw you just dropped by!

I've sent you a PM with recent news about Oolite which should hopefully be useful.
