Re: Next RL Meeting - Nottingham? June? a Saturday?
I was in Nottingham the other weekend and went to the Navigation. Not a bad place, a bit studenty, but close to the station and serves up a good variety of beers and so on. Apparently the best feature of it is "Annie's Burger bar", which is contained within the pub. Best burgers this side of the Trent, apparently.
Live music commences about 9 on the Saturday night we were there.
Another strange place to visit was the Newshouse - a small pub tucked away out of sight on Canal Street. Quiet place, rather small but definitely cosy and quieter than most so would be good for talking rather than having to shout over the stereo.
Beer mix was good (and we did sample EVERY ONE) and there was an extensive range of spirits. Some of the spirits were a little on the strange side (Polish whiskey, for example). Staff were friendly and willing to engage in playful banter.
Two good places I didn't know existed until this last week.
One thing I forgot was the "Riverside" complex - a series of bars along the city centre end of the canal. Talk about student/townie nightmare! Still as bad as I remember. Billy's comment pretty much summed it up, with people disappearing up their own arses... It's a good summary of anything over the Lace Market and that end of Hockley too. Shame, cos Hockley used to have some nice bars.
So. Is anyone actually up for this?

Just bumping this thread as the proposed date (June 16th) is only a month away. I'm still up for this...anyone else?

Now that's a thought.. given that it's on a weekend, the timezone difference wouldn't be too big of a hassle..

I have added a poll to help determine a start time, and what sort of venue, and who to bring, and how long to stay.
The ideal Chez SandJ plan is to book a hotel room for the Saturday night, have a wander round Nottingham in the morning, have a late lunch, and only then spend the late afternoon & evening in somewhere like Wetherspoon's The Company Inn or Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem talking Oolite and eating nachos. But a pub crawl's OK too (in which case Mrs SandJ will spend a happy evening in a hotel room watching soppy RomCom movies).

I may also be able to make it (I live just a few miles from Derby). I can't confirm for sure at this stage but I'm definately interested if available.

Awesome! Another person whose net name starts with an S... it's the Soolite Nottingham Meet!
That's something my lass was thinking about too - whether she could come with me and what she'd do if she did. Why can't the lassies come with us? They can talk Eastenders or knitting or whatever it is they do whilst we're shootin' up bugs and such and such*. The one negative aspect of that could be that Anne's mobility impaired, and that might limit the "pub crawl" options. The Trip is my pub of choice, but the Wetherspoons on market square is nice too. If the weather holds up then the outside bit of the Trip could be good so that we can hear each other.
The more the merrier, I say.
Your plan sounds good, SandJ.
* I'd ask her exactly what she thinks about this idea, but she's nodded off.
EDIT: Shipbuilder - you live near Derby, like Star Trek and play oolite? It's like Derby is creating clones of me.

Re: Next RL Meeting: Nottingham, UK. Saturday 16th June 2012
Sorry to double post, but with less than a week to go, have we finalised any plans yet?
For my side, I'm looking into bringing Mrs Selezen and staying overnight in Derby in whatever hotel accommodation we can find within the budget.
I'm happy for whatever times and arrangements are most popular (although a start no earlier than 2 would be preferable).
If possible, a pub crawl is to be avoided please, as Mrs Selezen has difficulty walking. If lots of wandering around will be part of the plan, then Mrs and I will probably come for some of the day, then depart at some point with the possibility of catching up later on.
