Re: Thanks for being a nice, friendly board.
I'm inclined to disagree on both points. First, the concept of "nation" is not so easily portable from the (relatively!) straightforward European context where it developed to the multifaceted states left over by colonialism in other parts of the world. It is clear that in Indonesia there are peoples who don't themselves think that they belong to the nation of Indonesia, but rather consider themselves nations of their own, being forced into the state of Indonesia.Smivs wrote:And being even more nitpicky, the country of Java is part of the State or Nation of Indonesia.Commander McLane wrote:And while we're being nitpicky, let me just add that Java is not a country. The island of Java is part of Indonesia.Smivs wrote:...it confuses loads of people, specially those in Java (the country) presumably!
Extracts from Dictionary.com - countrythe territory of a nation.a territory distinguished by its people, culture, language, geography, etc
Second, while Java is clearly distinguished by its geography, this distinction is better described by island than country. As far as peoples, cultures and languages are concerned, it is countries (plural), and not country. For instance, West Java and East Java are wildly different from each other.

As for nations.. Well before we ate all the dino's each extended family/tribe/clan considered its self a nation.
The only 'nitpicking' I've seen is when discussing the physics of Newtonian or not to Newtonian?
I wonder what nation a newtonian belongs to?
