I posted some patches to enable gamepad support, if you compile Oolite yourself check it out and let me know how it works for you.

A Joystick handler that has hardcoded values for using an Xbox 360 gamepad with Oolite. Note that other gamepads should work fine as well and won't require the Xbox360 driver, maybe the button mappings will be messed up as I only tested with the Xbox360 gamepad. My memories of playing Elite on the C=64 are only a haze nowadays, but I seem to remember that Thargoid attacks after (or was it during?) hyperspace jumps were quite frequent, even for new pilots.
