Re: An actual for-real paper book!
Thank you! The Kindle version has had its own Facebook page since it was launched, and also I've been shamelessly touting the boards on message boards that I frequent. I figure some posters in local shops might help me shift a few copies, I'll get one in the library at the school where I work (it wa...

An actual for-real paper book!
Howdy again. The printed proof has arrived and I have proof-read it... a few minor changes and I'll be ready to release Sidewinder Precision Pro in actual book form. It's a natty-looking little paperback that look surprisingly professional considering all I did was follow the idiot's guide on Create...

Re: Here's an idea: The Deadliest Threat of all ;)
Ya think that's bad? In the Star Trek: New Voyages fan series, one of their early episodes, In Harm's Way, revisited the Doomsday Machine and gave it an extra property: the heritable ability to make a copy of itself. Now that was scary.

Re: I just got compared to *who*?
I was trying to work out which Heinleins I've read over the years. Red Planet would have been first and Stranger in a Strange Land not too many years later. Friday , not too long after it came out, Starship Troopers a year or so before, and I finally caught up with Time Enough for Love a few years a...

I just got compared to *who*?
For a hobby writer who was looking to pick up a little pin money (and financially that's all it's proved to be so far, and the tax man will not be getting fat on my royalties so far), this is unbelievable... Robert who did you say? Big thanks to all the Oolite community and especially Thargoid for t...

Re: where's the big money for a Cobra ship?
I notice that unless you're on the very edge of the galaxy, the parcel contracts at the top rating have a maximum value somewhere around 3-5K (and involve still flying to the opposite edge/corner). Just not worth it if you're in a Cobra Mk III where you can make 1.4K per jump on a milk run (not to ...

Re: Adder start: No kidding it's hard!
Imho Cobra MkI is the weakest ship in Oolite. Check the stats: Moray is much better for similar cost. (img removed to save space) If you want to check OXP ships then this list show ships in the same price category. The 'Sun' Ray doesn't seem to have made that list. I've been running one for a while...

Re: Going public...
Sales are now well into double figures and each of the three titles has a five-star review!
Takes a lot more than that, sadly.

Re: Unwanted re-routing
Hi and welcome. The magic formula here is TravelTimeInHrs = DistanceInLY * DistanceInLY. This is done in order to add an element of strategy in your route planning. Take risk of a longer route and arrive in time or take risk of losing a contract but exposing yourself to less danger by means of fewe...

Going public...
Hi, all, I have taken the plunge and set myself up as an author on Kindle Direct Publishing under the name "Douglas Porter". One of the titles up there is "Sidewinder Precision Pro" and I have to say it gives me a bit of a charge to see it up there as an actual ebook with a cover...

Re: Claymore Mine
(Sorry! Less writing than I hoped got done while I was on holiday, and now I am back at work - teaching, so very busy right now. I hope to resume the adventures of the Claymores in due course but can't promise a timescale.)

Re: Claymore Mine
Having a little money is enormously different from having no money at all. Of course, the shared payoff for a successful escort mission, at the price we'd pitched ourselves at, wasn't huge, though it was a lot more than the proverbial Jameson starts out with. If we'd had a Cobra III to play with, we...

Re: Claymore Mine
It's a big help when your trader knows what he's doing. The Price Is Right lurched forward a few kilometres on injectors, not out of any hope of making a run for the aegis but to cluster the ungodly in a zone broadly to her rear, which let four of her escorts slot in behind the first wave of Assassi...
