How about the laser pulses? They look like just a 2D monochrome filled triangle, complete with aliasing. They'd look better with some kind of diffusion effect.

They’re actually four triangles. :-)

I have a detailed plan to improve them, but it won’t be until after the next stable release.

availability of any colour at all would be good, instead of the machine second guessing my choice and overwriting

The one thing that really looks 8-bit to me, something we all come across many times each session: the concentric circles when you dock at a Station / Rock Hermit / anywhere.

Having got the planets and ships looking so good this really stands out as something from another era.
Its bad luck to be superstitious . . .

I think the appropriate aphorism is 'woot'. 8)

As we all know, you can replace them with any of the other models in the game by c&p'ing the desired dat-file into your AddOns-folder (e.g. "buoy.dat"), and renaming it to "ring.dat".

Try it out, if you're not easily scared.

so, instead of ring.dat, can the game not just gen 1 of them and we could replace it w/ a textured docking tunnel w/ a door at the end?

Isn't the same model used for witchjump? In that case, docking doors would look even weirder.

I think this is only true for current 1.73.4, in the trunk different dats can be defined for docking/launching and wormhole.
