Handling the Imperial Star Destroyer

Post by hiran »

Hello there,

having played Oolite for a while I finally made it to the Imperial Star Destroyer. (admitted, I also played with the save games)
It is a really nice ship and I enjoy having the size so usually I do not get attacked by pirates - and if I get involved in combat there is a huge fleet of fighters with me. :-)
However that ship's size is also a problem. It seems I can neither dock in stations, fuel stations, asteroid/pirate hideouts or anywhere. When I tried to perform planetary landing the ship crashed again. That means no trading, no refuel, no repairs, no missions.

I had a look at https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?p=269509#p269509 but pressing shift-c or just c will give me the message that the station does not want me to dock or refuses to issue docking instructions.

So how is the ship actually handled? How am I intended to perform trading or just repairing the ship? How can I release the fighters, or more importantly call them back? Do I have to trade the ship for something else when I have a chance?

No idea at all, I'm afraid!

But - welcome to the Bulletin Boards, I'm sure somebody will be along shortly with some ideas!

By the way, one presumes you have to refuel with fuel scoops, yes? Although if you don't have them already ...

The fuel itself is not really the problem. Yes, I can fuel scoop, and I have this fuel generator which consumes enough power to drain the shields.
But there is so much more that you need the station for. One important part is the game saving...

There is supposed to be a shuttle for docking with stations. Not sure exactly what triggers it, try targeting the station maybe?

The screenshots on the Imperial Destroyer’s wiki page show the lambda shuttle. Its wiki page says it is broken on current versions of Oolite (paraphrased from the known issues section). I’m afraid this renders the imperial destroyer useless.

I just managed to dock into a coriolis station. Not authorized, and I was lucky not to scratch the walls with a ship that size.
On a dodecahedron station such attempts were lethal several times.

Maybe it is station dependent? But then I'd like to know before trying...

Edit: The icosahedron station also seemed to work. Hmmmm.....

I also read something about the docking shuttle - although I have not seen where it should come from. Also I have plenty of tie fighters and viper escorts but I would'nt even know how to choose them for docking.

I did fly this ship for a while and shift + c indeed sent a shuttle and simulated a docking. With Lambda Freighters/Liners I used parts of this code, and it is working, However, as much as I recall there were some problems with the fighters, not sure what exactly, but I could find out again.

Norby is using his own version of the shuttle, its independent from the Star Wars Ships.

I just tried targeting the station ('r') while piloting a Star Destroyer and saw a shuttle launching from my Destroyer. I waited a bit and observed it docking with the station, at which point the game presented me with the docking tunnel sequence and I was in and able to use all station menus normally. Seems like it's working fine, To be on the safe side, just don't switch targets while the shuttle is in flight.

When I point the ship to the station and press 'r', I get the message
Ident system set to Coriolis Station.
ILS set to Coriolis Station
Auto roll will be active before the dock
I do not see any shuttle launching. And the messages do not hint that a shuttle might be sent. It all just sounds like I should do the docking myself. Pressing 'c' or 'shift-c' behave as I mentioned above - the Coriolis Station does not want me to dock, hence there are no docking instructions or other navigation help. All I could do so far is try my luck with unauthorized docking.

It sounds odd to me that my setup behaves differently than you or others describe. What could be the reason? Is there anything we can investigate?
E.g. I have an Ubuntu 18 machine with german keyboard. Is the OS an issue? Could it be that the keys I press are not exctly the ones expected? Is there a plugin I have or have not installed that could cause the situation?

Things we can do to troubleshoot:
1. Check your Latest.log file for any unusual messages or errors originating from the ISD scripts.
2. Empty your OXP folder and have only ISD installed. Is the issue still there?
3. Which version of the OXP are you actually using? I did all the above with version 1.6, downloaded from the wiki page link, not the expansion manager.
4. Do you have a legal record in the game? Maybe the station does not let you in because you are fugitive or something like that'?

I forgot to mention earlier that when I target the station with 'r', the message "Your Shuttle is going to Coriolis Station" appears together with the shuttle itself. So the OXP clearly tells you what is happening. I also think that being on Ubuntu or on a German keyboard are not relevant with the issue.

for 1) Latest.log:
I found this file in ~/.Oolite/Logs/Latest.log

So I loaded the commander where I have the Imperial Star Destroyer, launched from the station to fly to the navigation boy, then turn around and try to dock again. Docking means I press 'r' to select the station, then 'L' to ask for permission and finally 'c' or 'C' to make the ship dock. It failed with the above described effects. So far everything is repeatable. Here is the excerpt from the log:

I should probably answer the other questions before deleting the OXPs...
But what is ISD? And how do I identify them?

For 3)
Confirmed, I used the expansion manager and it installed version 1.6.

For 4)
My legal status is clean, the rank is mostly harmless. I am anything but good at fighting. That's where I enjoy the escort and fighter options.

No need to delete them, just move them elsewhere (temporarily).
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Well, I think I need to learn a bit about Oolite now. How do I move the OXP/OXZ/ISDs elsewhere? Is every plugin one file or folder? If yes, where? Somehow I cannot find the Star Destroyer in my filesystem although it should exist somehwere.

And how do I install the mentioned addon manually? Here I can download, but what next? http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Imperi ... r#Download
