Windows Live - Skydrive - A good alternative to Box.com?

Post by JazHaz »

Hi all,

I recently went onto my Hotmail email account (which I don't use very much) and noticed this feature. It seems to be a cloud storage solution, where you get 25 Gb of space to share stuff.

The only thing is I don't understand if people without Windows Live accounts can access the files.

As a test I have uploaded my fixed version of Assassins OXP, v1.3.3, into my Public folder. Can anyone, perhaps a Mac user, access it?

If you can, then it may be a good alternative to Box.com.

Here's the link to the file: https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?ci ... FD70AE!192

Maybe you could start a Kickstarter Campaign to found your £4500 pledge. 8)

Just downloaded that with no problem, JH. I'm using Win XP, but not Windows Live.

That's great. Still want to know if Mac users can access it too.

Fantastic! :)

Then the 25 Gb space could be a very useful alternative to Box.com. Especially for those users who have filled up their free Box accounts, and want to upload more stuff.

Didn't work for me (old Firefox install on Linux). It looked like it was doing something with Javascript, but never finished it.

Hmmm, not so good. Maybe you need to upgrade your Firefox? Do you have an alternative browser to try with?

It worked for me on Windows ME (yes, WinME) running Firefox 2.0.0.20 and Xubuntu 11.10 running Firefox 11. It also tells the world your real name, in case that bothers you.

Probably - it's a security-patched 3.5 - but I'm using Debian stable which is generally a fair bit behind the "latest" software, and installing a newer Firefox separately is just hassle. (Still, if it works on 2.0)

Debian stable will probably itself be updated in early 2013, so I can work around it by dual-booting in to Windows until then. Don't worry about not using it solely on my account - I don't think many other people will be using Debian stable as a desktop/games OS...
