Half-formed ideas bubbling...
Laser OC as purchasable item, perhaps at low-tech worlds only?
(No self-respecting shipyard would do this, of course. So, if it sneaks into core game: Low-tech worlds only. OXP dependent: Rock hermits, FTZ, other shady locations; either replacing or supplementing the low-tech main stations.)

Effects: Heat warning remains, but the cut-out is, er, cut out.
Each shot fired after warning has a chance to damage (destroy?) the laser.
Advanced version: Heat indicator is tweaked so it will show the temp rising above the safe zone. The higher it goes above safe level, the higher the risk of damage. Instead of a per-shot risk there is a per-time-unit risk while temperature stays above safe level.
"Actually this is a common misconception... I do *not* in fact have a lot of time on my hands at all! I just have a very very very very bad sense of priorities."

Well, that might stop people from asking for a cooler

I still recommend to install multiple lasers and learn to shoot with aft and side lasers...then the heat is not a problem anymore ;)

I can't argue with that. A good skill to learn.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!
