Been discussed before - simple answer "no" - I wanted black ones - not possible either

I wanted to create a ship that looked like it was being eaten (this is in the days before Griff's clever nibbling shaders demos) or transforming by creating a large black flasher that would pulse slowly and thus, against a background of mainly stars/black look like it was being eaten/regenerating - I was thinking of organic-B5-shadow like ships a long time ago - but no black flashers was the first stumbling block - I guess now I'll have to learn how to use the shaders (and how to model ships (and write OXPs...)etc, etc, etc)

Well, flashers don't cast any additional light and if you've had chance to look over some of Griff's new ships you can see that his glow maps would do what you want (but still don't cast any additional light - I asked why a looooonnnnnng time agoand Ahruman bamboozled me with some techno-babble that I think boiled down to - "it's complicated and Oolite's not programmed graphical to cope with it")

The simple answer is, in fact, yes. As of Oolite 1.73, subentities can be specified as dictionaries for greater flexibility.
Code: Select all
subentities =
(
{
type = flasher;
color = whiteColor;
position = (0, 0, 100);
initially_on = yes;
size = 10;
frequency = 1;
phase = 0;
}
);

…however, flashers (like lasers) can’t be black (or below 50% value in the HSV colour space). It wouldn’t work anyway; if you could set a flasher to black, it would just be invisible, since it uses additive blending.Commander McLane wrote:Cool!
So, DaddyHoggy, when can we expect to see your eat-my-ship.oxp?

(Back to flashers)
I tried to make them glow (not flash) at their peak, but I'm confused here. If I set offset to 0.5 (which is supposed to be peak of sine), I get half-a-glow. Same for practically any value, while a flashing flashers are clearly brighter than non-flashing ones. (Offset is supposed to be brightness control for always-on-flashers, right?)
I'm talking about regular flashers. I still haven't tested this new flasher technique.

I have to pick what I'd like to do quite carefully to maintain this 100% non-achievement record!Commander McLane wrote:...and still we won't see DH's first OXP!

Too late.. you blew that out of the water with your contributions to YAH..DaddyHoggy wrote:I have to pick what I'd like to do quite carefully to maintain this 100% non-achievement record!Commander McLane wrote:...and still we won't see DH's first OXP!
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Ah, but I don't count my contributions to YAH, or OSE, or Race Teams, or LH2 or the (potential) Banking oxps because they're not mine - I didn't start them, just chucked into the pot a little flavouring that's allDiziet Sma wrote:Too late.. you blew that out of the water with your contributions to YAH..DaddyHoggy wrote:I have to pick what I'd like to do quite carefully to maintain this 100% non-achievement record!Commander McLane wrote:...and still we won't see DH's first OXP!
