Hi jimdickin, and welcome to the friendliest board this side of Reidquat!™

Not that I've ever heard of.. they are actually just some (quite clever) dumb AI.. If you have certain OXPs installed, such as RandomHits, they will "talk" to you, but there is no way to respond.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Hi jimdickin, welcome to the boards! Currently players can't make any ship-to-ship communications, so apart from shouting at the screen, the answer to your query is "no". It is something that a lot of people are keen on, though, and there are a lot of clever people about here, so in the long run, maybe! But not yet.

Wasn't that also the universal solution to every computer problem? (Together with the hammer, of course...) 8)

Just out of curiosity, what was it you wanted to say to them anyway??

Oh, you know. “Guard your hockey sticks!” or “Melon! Melon! Melon!”. Normal ship-to-ship banter.

Kettledrums! Kettledrums!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Would be interesting if you could have some predefined voice commands to draw upon, for example to needle a faster pirate which has turned away and made a run for it into turning back and having his ass handed to him on a platter...

It would certainly add to the immersive aspect of the game.

(For anybody else who plays: I'm thinking of the pre-selected Radio calls in Urban Terror - or the "gesticulations" in Quake III)

Or the taunts in Unreal Tournament..

you know DH, I was thinking along this same line only ten minutes ago.. great minds and all that...

This actually would be kinda cool.. it would only need one key and a random generator..

When did you learn to speak Thargoid?

The local university has been running a degree course in conversational Thargoid;

"Shave your monkey! Dumb kumquat!"

do a flyby, and use a shader to show a hand that flips the opponent or similar

Would already be possible by simply tie it to one of ship properties..
that's non java properties I mind you...

there are several possibilities

fire missile shows off the finger, would be a nice way for the NPC to taunt the player too..

NPC to taunt the player would be easy though,
but the more I think about it, the more I think
it would be a rather large chunk of code to
put something in, that is basicly useless.

Also afaik there is no way to address another ship directly.. everything is just beamed to everybody... but of course is aimed at the player...

allthough i could picture the player typing, at the bottom at the blue console thingi box:

"Requesting landing Clearance"
, instead of pressing shift+l
also

"Surrender your cargo"
"Surrender your Ship"
"want to swap some cargo"<- kind like sales men do, at rest spots at the free-way, They swap goods that have in their car, they do not need any-more...

the possibilities is infinite. You could even use it as a debug console  much like how Quake and its spin offs used to do
