"Full Shaders" graphic card issue - SOLVED!

Post by Lestradae »

Hi to the devs,

don't know if anyone remembers but I had instant crashes when I switched "Full Shaders" on on my system under the "1.73" trunk Oolite (the "Crashy Dregders" test oxp case), then, with later revisions suddenly these crashes vanished - I could switch full shaders on unpunished.

Well, since I upgraded "1.73" to revision 2281, the crashes have returned on my system, exact same instances!

And I had the following in my log before the last crash: "[gnustep]: 2009-08-12 15:13:50.481 oolite[6068] Defaults path 'D:\myoolite/trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Defaults' did not exist - created it"

:?

Which is very curious, because the only change between 2280 and 2281 is a non-code related change. Which revision did you upgrade from?

Also, I just did a flash-test with the crashy dredger. Again, no problems here and I can see the ships in the shipyard just fine on full shaders.

As for the log message, it is just telling you that since you run the installation for the first time, it created the Defaults folder for storing the preferences file. Nothing to do with the crash (and yes, I tested it just in case).

I think from the region of revision 2275.

OK, I am slowly suspecting my graphics card here. It turned out to be the reason for my dying notebook ...

Card is: GeForce 8600M GT
Driver version: 179.48 DirectX version 10.0

What is the shader nescessity, OpenGL support?

Thanks for your time A_C

Hopefully you still have the old installer around. Please fall back to that revision and confirm that it works again. Try multiple times and switch revisions backwards and forwards a few times to be sure.

My site still has a 2277 installer available.. (I leave a few old ones there but deleted 2275 this morning, sorry)

you can get it here http://s248731467.onlinehome.us/OoliteI ... 77-dev.exe Login name is Oolite, password is cobramk3
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

If it's a Notebook use the vendors drivers.

Used Diziet Sma's older installer, and the game also crashes at Full Shaders setting.

I am now sure of it, as the Griff Cobra shows its starpattern when the full shaders are on and does not when they are not on.

So it has to be the drivers of my probably extreme quality graphics frak card. They were perhaps newly installed because the old very qualitative graphics card killed my laptop and was exchanged ...

So thanks guys, the problem is now confirmed not to stem from Oolite but from the very good card.

I'll go install the latest drivers from the card vendor

Happy to report that after installing the newest graphics drivers from NVIDIA, full shaders are working again properly.

So, this was definitely a crappy graphics card / drivers issue and not an Oolite issue.

Cheers 8)
