Fatal crash to desktop

Post by tinker »

Not sure what is happening here, afaik nothing has changed from yesterday to today, but I now get a ctd when trying to start oolite. Checking the last lines of stderr shows it is not getting as far as loading oxp's though I have removed all oxp's just to be sure. For completeness the whole relevant stderr file is attached.

First of all: sorry! :(

Second, and just to make sure: Are you pressing SHIFT on startup? And if not, do things change if you press SHIFT?

Third: It would surely be helpful to send the crash-report (which--as far as I understand--provides a lot more information than the stderr-file only) to the appropriate place, which is [email protected] (as indicated here).

The “Unexpected cross reference in property list” exception came up before. It was the result of a corrupt cache file (and a bug in GNUstep – plist loading isn’t supposed to throw exceptions). I’ve already fixed this for 1.72; in this situation, the cache will just be discarded.

The workaround here is to delete the cache. First, try holding down shift during startup. If that doesn’t work, you need to manually remove the cache file – ~/GNUstep/Library/Caches/Oolite-cache.plist under Linux, and probably <installation directory>\GNUstep\Library\Caches\Oolite-cache.plist under Windows, although I’m not sure of that one.

Thanks for the swift - and accurate answers. I had already tried deleting the cache with the shift key during start which made no difference, but after manually deleting it everything works OK.

Regarding this, I believe the current code for the shift-key-on-startup-clears-cache under Linux does not work as intended. We may need to revise that part, as it is a platform specific missing feature.

I have noticed that it does indeed not work correctly, but it does sometimes which is somewhat illogical.

I have been researching lots of case errors that occur with Linux and have been restarting/ checking stderr / clearing cache several times a day for a couple of weeks and found that shift starting usually gives the message in stderr that cache flushing was forced but sometimes does not, I have also seen a couple of times a message that the cache was refreshed but no message that it was forced. I have found it more reliable to hold the shift key down before I click the menu link to start., I do of course keep it pressed until loading is complete.
