From a distance the traveler can see the many craters on Leesti. One of the most ' astroid-punished' planets in the sector.

I wouldn't like to live on a planet where every now and then a meteor falls with the energy of a nuclear warhead - then again, I wouldn't like to live by an active volcano or tectonic fault either...

It does look fab even in the stills.

In the future would the engine support a layer of transparency around the planet so the clouds could actually be offset from the planets surface and move independently? Or how about bump mapping for mountains and the like so that sunlight casts shadows and adds additional textural detail?

I'm not slighting in the least the fantastic work done - I'm genuinely curious to know if this is it or whether further leaps in "wow" factor will be forthcoming.

Such an engine would be awesome, however the effects should not be as strong as for example the bump mapping in Ad Astra and certainly not as Spore. But it requires a whole new planet engine I think.

I think if anything, there will be implemented "normal maps" which are like bump maps, however only way better...

bump maps can only look so good as long as they dont have to stick out to much. to much and it looks odd..

normal maps can be "extruded" way beyond that limit...
