OK.

On delivering one of the cargo missions the game crashed when docking at the station.

It seems to have been some kind of RAM overrun again, stderr says virtual memory exhausted and Oolite was using 1.45 GB of RAM at the time.

Again, my specs: Pentium IV, 2GB RAM, NIVIDIA GForce 8600M GT, Vista

Slowly, this is getting frustrating ... :x

i must say i find that 1.70 with random hits, galactic military and local hero runs out of virtual memory far more quickly than 1.69.1 without any of those OXPs.

No idea where the 'blame' lies...

Wow, I'm impressed at the amount of stuff you're throwing at oolite! :D

To find out which oxp is missing guntex.png:

That's what I do with notepad++, it's a 'proper' text editor, and it's free!

Open notepad++, then Search>Find in Files

Find what: guntex.png
Filters: *.dat
Directory: C:\Program Files\Oolite\AddOns

Of course, if oolite is in a different location, change C:\Program Files\Oolite to wherever your oolite is.

After a little while it should find out which dat file is asking for the missing .png
If you don't find it, try changing Filters: to *.*

Even if you can't replace that file, knowing which OXP needs the missing file is a step in the right direction!

Sarcasm. Nice 8) It still doesn`t explain where 1.400.000.000 Bytes (per second!) go. Never ever. Think games like X3 with all mods in or Oblivion with 140 mods in. They run without hiccup on my machine.

Random hits, galactic military and local hero are great and very big oxps, but their routines aren`t even close to, say, Vanilla X3. So no explanation there.

I hope it`s obvious that this is not about blaming anyone. Oolite is great, and it`s a private endeavour and lots of things can go wrong. I want to find out where the big bugs lie. Which, I guess, is in everyone`s interest here.

I`m not complaining to anyone who is working on Oolite, why should I, and I decided to go bug-hunting as I run everything at once and am destined to find any bug that rears its ugly head. But it gets frustrating slowly. :evil:

Any bug found is a bug potentially removed, so.

Filters: *.dat
Directory: C:\Program Files\Oolite\AddOns
I`ll attempt that and report where the faulty guntex thingy is so that it can be repaired not only in my game ...

I think 1.70 itself has some leaks that Another Commander and Big A are trying to fix for the MNSR. A known leak is on the Short Range Chart for example. I'm not totally sure how memory works on Oolite, but I think a big factor is the number of textures being loaded into memory. Although Random Hits, Local Hero and Matts Navy OXP are big OXPs in terms of scripts they don't actually use that much memoray for textures. Random Hits for example only adds ship (plus some escorts) to a system when a mission is running, so I don't think it will chew up that much memory. The Space Bar is pretty detailed to is chewing up memory, but then again its only one object.

I suspect its just the cumaltive effect of the number of ships from all the OXPs you have installed. You probabley have something like 300 extra textures to load. The game has to load the textures for everything it populates a system with. So (for example) when the game adds (say) 10 pirates if those ten pirates are all OXP ships (likley with every OXP installed as the OXP pirates outnumber the native ones), its ten extra textures to load. Griff has done some stunning models and textures, but obviously these do chew up much more memory than the standard corrolis.

I am not sure its something wrong with any indiviual OXP its the cummulative effect. I've found 1.70 more stable than 1.69, but I play with all the mission and station OXPs in and about 30 ship OXPs. Hopefully memoray leakage will be fixed, but the more OXPs you put in at once the more strain you put on Oolite.

PS: The guntext is a bug from my own Renegade Pirates (typo of the name in shipdata), but I think its harmless. It just means that the laser emmiters on the renegade ships are grey coloured rather than the indented black.

Aha, then ignore my posting in the Expansion Forum where I am searching for a fugitive guntex.

Am I right in assuming that if I create a "guntex.png" in the Renegades folder the bug will be squashed?

I hope that they will be successful. Oolite is continuing to grow and I think will attract more and more people and they will try to play with everything in - so that memory overrun, I prophecy :idea: :shock: :idea: will become more and more of a problem.

And many people will play Random Hits, Local Hero and Matts Navy OXP together in the future, they are not yet exactly bug-free.

The texture is present in the Textures folder, it just has the wrong name due to a typo. If you rename it to guntex.png then it should be OK.

I suspect that LittleBear is right and that the problem is a memory leak in 1.70. For example I've noticed that it leaks 6Meg a second when you're on the short range chart.

I have tried putting everything oxp in one by one and looked when and if something didn`t work and viewed the stderr file afterwards. Anything that cropped up I reported here (and still do). I assume that bugs will be in 1.70 or in any of the oxps. If I can exclude oxps at some point (and I think I`m nearly there) it has to be 1.70. And I do this - even if I start grating on some nerves - because 1) this will improve my game and 2) if it works with aaaaaalltheoxps in on my system, that means I have found a stable configuration, and others can profit from that.

So, that`s why I`m so obsessive nowadays. Behold my brandnew signature. :)

Wow, that`s bad. Does it also happen with the Galactic Chart? And, do you know if it gets worse when just watching the Short range chart, or does it happen when changing screens back and forth?

Because, my game usually uses (in the aaalloxps-state) about 550 MB RAM. When one of those crashes comes, this goes up to 1.400 MB RAM. That would be 120 times the short range chart?! Could that be the culprit?

it happens when just sitting on the screen doing nothing. It's fixed in the development source so we'll get that in 1.71.

If you want to see for yourself (you're on windows aren't you?) then go and download 'process explorer' (google will find it, it's a microsoft thing). It's like task manager but much more powerful.

Right click on the column headings so you can add 'private bytes' as a column to be displayed.

Then find the row corresponding to Oolite and watch the number goup. (You may want to add 'private bytes delta' as well to see the change per second).
