The next things to do:

rebuild and retexture: ROCK HERMIT & Asteroids (they are "crude" )

Sound Project! (All sounds in Oolite don't fit + Oosat2 & Oosat1). Sounds are one of the important things of a game. You can live with ugly graphics and bugs, but not with bad sounds...

@Snug. Have a look at Charlies's Asteroid Models (Included in Asteroid Storm OXP). They are anything but crude. 13 Different Shapes and Sizes. EG:-

Wiggy's response to one of Dr Nil's 2006 many suggestions for improvements (most of which we now enjoy).

Further OXP control is a good idea, but you can already create, or rather mod a system to have no cops, and I think addPlanet exists. See the nova mission. But I'm not sure what you'd do out of a system that you could do within one. And everyone knows that the space between world is filled with Thargoids. A station wouldn't last a minute!

Lots of interesting stuff in this thread.

But I'm intrigued by the quote I've put in red which I've not seen before but seems to chime with my impressions from playing.

I've not seen much of this in the Lore I've read (but may well have missed it).

Any comments?

Different criminal system. You should not be able to commit outright evil acts of piracy, then make a few skim jumps and have everything forgotten and forgiven.

Auto Trader equipment. You just tell it in which system you plan to dock at a station next time and it loads your cargo up accordingly. Generally I think that there should be a wider array of automation options or equipment to let players automate away the parts of the game that they find less attractive and really get down to do the stuff that they like the most according to taste.

Auto Pilot Auto Tracker - Combat Software
I've never seen this thread before, but I like the way Dr. Nil was thinking.
I thought the grey swan symbol was good, but when he said the new country's flag should be printed on "holographic" fabric, I began to doubt.

It's an interesting thread. The one idea I've so far come across which grabs me is this one:

What about 'rumours', other fighter-trader games like the Tradewinds series had a location where captains could go and get rumours (for a price) about the economies of local ports. It was a matter that the rumours were sometimes false.

A small idea. Without enhanced settings/AI etc, out of the box, at full pelt in a Cobra Mk 3, its reasonably easy to drive off multiple ships behind you with a military laser by sniping them til they retreat (unless they're those bleeping annoying Kraits).

To make this have consequences, if you drive off a fugitive ship (maybe one marked high bounter or leader), and the ship escapes, it is added to a list along with the system. The next time you enter that system, those ships on the list marked as the current system spawn but with a slightly greater spec and makes straight for the player with suitable messages like "Think I had forgotten you? Think again!" and "I'm back, Commander, and this time I've bought a little friend" *spams military laser*. That sort of thing.

Thoughts?

I really like this one.

I'm not sure how one would get it to work, as I'm unsure that the ships are "rememberable" by Oolite. But others will know more than I.

Have you tried Hotrods.oxp? Not quite the same, but...

I'll check that out, nice one!

A related idea, if the number of kills in a system is tracked, you could spawn a ship next time in the system with messages saying something along the lines of "You killed my brother/sister/cousin/lover etc etc prépare to die!"

If its not tracked per system perhaps do it via the Trophy Log instead?

It is not.

I seem to recall we discussed similar things back in February.

It was possible pre-1.80. I'm not sure whether to mention names, as I can't remember whether we ever discussed this one publicly, but at one time there existed a fork of Oolite that had this particular feature of being able to record the ships in a system in the saved-game (efficiently, in the systemInfo section, not the way it has to be done now, in the missionVariables section). Its persistence was obviated by the introduction of the javascript system populator.

Was this back in the Berlios era?

I think that there are several oxps which record the number of kills in a system. Flight log. Wildeblood's new Serial Killer. Possibly Library/CCL offers it as an option. And there are others which record specific kills (usually involving missions, such as DGill's new Feudal States or the Galactic Navy).

I would guess that in the interests of keeping the save files less than a million times the size of the original Elite, it might be best to use the Trophy Log data!

What did you make of Hotrods? Another quirky oxp worth a peek is Personalities.

No, Berlios was before my time.
