Can I adjust T.16000 Hotas so the ship will coast when I let go of roll or turn?

Post by Locke »

Hi, I'm very new here, been setting up my Thrustmaster T.16000M all day. It's working nicely, except that if I'm rolling or yawing, when I let go of the stick the motion stops dead in its tracks. Is there a way to set something up so there would be some natural coasting along the movement vector?
I don't need perfect realism, but the sudden immediate stop in mid space is killing my immersion...
If it helps, I'm on PC, Windows 11, played Elite on an Amiga back in the 80s, and played Elite Dangerous for several years, so I'm middling to fair with computers and games. On the bad side... I'm in my mid-60s now, and my skill with computers "ain't what she used to be."

Thank you for any help!!

I'm not into the game too much, but I am aware what you're talking about. There were multiple discussions on this board - one of them I could find here:

Thanks guys, I appreciate the support!
Hiran, I read the link, it's certainly pertinent and interesting. Similar to what I was looking for, a little inertia as I release the stick. Not so much an issue with the throttle, as it stays where I leave it.
Truthfully, I don't expect a solution, if there's not a simple toggle control built into the game. And this morning I achieved a pretty good manual dock, without the rotation being an issue. Turns out, in practice, and with practice, it's starting to feel natural.

Cholmondely, In my searches I see your posts (and people quoting you) far and wide. This may not be directly in your wheelhouse, but you've already been of significant help, even if inadvertantly. Thanks for all the info you've shared!

This is a quite interesting request. The stick input code behaves differently to the keyboard equivalent. Keyboard controls have this inertia thing you are after but joystick controls don't.

This is because keys or stick buttons can have a binary pressed/unpressed state, but stick axes are analog and they output a range of values between these two extremes. It comes down to finding a way of distinguishing between the stick returning to neutral position as a result of the player releasing it vs manually "driving" it there (in which case you don't want to apply any movement dampener). There doesn't seem to be a perfect solution to this out there (which is why it is interesting). I have an idea how to do it but unfortunately no joystick to test it with.

So it's a good thing you are already getting used to it. If I manage to get my hands on a joystick or a gamepad at some point I might have a go at it.

I'd be interested in hearing any progress you eventually make (or don't make). I noticed the difference even on the stick itself, between "buttons", versus axes. It makes a lot of sense the way you describe it. And yes, I'm glad it's starting to click.
I take forever to learn new things, and a lot of repetition to keep the memories. Oolite resonates with original Elite for me, I hope that will smooth the learning process. Looking forward to actually playing!

It's going rather well; or not so well, if you consider all the time spent playing Oolite now.
I'm a slow and cautious type, and like to read up, plan, and think about it before actually diving in. Finally getting practical play-time now, and having a great time at it. Docking is no longer intimidating. Currently doing the buying/selling circuit, gearing up the Cobra. Ready for a bit of fighting finally, but not going hunting yet.
Only been attacked twice; once was way too soon, four ships started chasing me just before reaching the station. I chose the better part of valor and ran. Later, attacked by a single Wolf. That was fun, but didn't have a better laser yet. When the tables turned, he ran away.

Been adding expansion packs. Added some that seemed appealing. A fair number of new ships and reskins. The universe seemed rather stark, until I found BGS (Background Set). Now it feels alive. Oolite is certainly a fitting tribute to the spirit of Elite. Elite:Dangerous is a wonderful game, but Oolite feels more like the Elite I've been searching for.

Next up, I want to create a spreadsheet with as much ship data as possible. There's a lot of individual ship info available, but I can't find a spreadsheet that lets me compare all the ships at a glance. Seeing it all together will help me build a "road map" for which ships to buy, and when.

I feel like Toad from Wind in the Willows (The Disney version). But instead of Motor Cars, my new mania is Oolite. :)

Maybe this is a step in your direction?

Hiran, that's not "a step"... it's at least an entire flight of stairs!!
Thank you, this will save me a LOT of google hunting. I've already gone taken individual screenshots of each page from the ship library in-game, as well as the stats listed in the ship-to-ship comparison in-game. (This might be from an expansion pack.) I're started the database, but only had time last night to do the first 25 ships.
It's both a work in progress, and a hobby; making the spreadsheet is it's own kind of fun, and will be useful in the game. It makes more sense to me when you can sort, re-sort, and compare lines of data in a glance.

Also, a small apology is in order; I've been using Oolite Starter from the get-go, but only yesterday found a conversation that indicated you're the creator and guiding spirit of Oolite Starter. I feel like a fan that didn't recognize a celebrity from his favorite movie...
Oolite Starter is fantastic - I spent hours that first evening, just picking expansions. From flavors, grabbed the Beginners Pack. I know, it said if you have hours to hunt and pick individual mods, then don't grab the Beginner's pack... but I wanted something to start off with. Most everything after that was ships, with some ambient and QOL additions.
Started playing a few times, then would find that "one more add-on". The last one was BGS. That made a whopping difference in the feel of the game. No other adds since then, it feels complete now.

Having played Skyrim, I'm aware the shotgun approach isn't the best way of adding mods, but have been pleased and grateful at how stable it runs. The only hiccup was in adding BGS. Starter informed me there's an upgrade, and I spent a while trying to intuit... then a while trying to google... how to change the old version for the new version. It blew my mind when booting Starter back up, it simply asked if it should upgrade. Rather sheepishly, I said "yes", and job done. Again, very much gratitude for your work. It greatly simplified the process from vanilla, to "Flying my Cobra!"

That was my last re-start, and the last mod added. Having fun, playing the game, and creating a ship database. Again, thank you for the link. That's very helpful.
