Going back to Managing Battles.
YouTube - Elite: Dangerous - Imperial vs Federation Capital Ship
What would we need to simulate an invasion? Am I correct in presuming that Resistance Commander does not do this?
(Say an invasion of a feudal by several commies?)
With the systems oxp's we get smaller ships for the Commie navies, and individual ships for the feudals. No capital ships in them, though (unless I misunderstand what I've read).
Can we make the battle convincing?
- Can we replicate ships bombarding the planet from orbit?
What about neutrals (eg the player - as in the YouTube film linked above)?
What else would there be to consider?
- Montana suggested earlier that there might already be an AI usable for ships starting off the battle...
First List: Possible things needing to be manipulated in-game to create a war
1) Navies on the move.
2) Admirals giving orders... (of grandiosity to be determined...)
3) Massive space battles with possible player involvement
4) Wrecks, lots of valuable detritus generated for scooping (some too big to scoop!), life boats, rescue pods, beings in spacesuits etc
5) Planetary Invasions - and planetary defences too! Massive lasers scouring the heavens...
6) No-go zones
7) Regime changes
How much of this do we actually have ... and how much would be a pain in the unmentionables to manage?
Second List: Possible resources for somebody trying to create a "wars" oxp
*Category:Navies (every ship I've come across which looks naval)
*Category:Systems OXPs (for naval ships for commies, dictatorships etc).
*Configurable Populator has code for altering the population of the solar system (to reduce normal traffic in times of war)
*Station Validator remembers the destruction of orbital stations, preventing their magical resurrection on one's next visit to the system. Spara (2014).
*Coriolis (burning) - this has old textures - and needs finishing (when you dock, the station acts as if all were normal)
*Imperial Star Destroyer contains code for Factories (making Tie-fighters/Tie-interceptors)
*Leviathan Platform - a planetary defence platform
Peripheral matters:
*Diplomancy OXP - has war maps showing warring systems, and allows citizenship of systems and declaration as a refugee for enemy citizens in warring systems (needs work - there is a perpetual declaration of peace, and a resumption of illegality in neutral systems if war is redeclared).
*GNN allows declaration of wars/invasions/truces etc - already used by Diplomancy for this

One of my (lot) WIP's include a small fleet attacking the main planet, admiral orders, drop shuttles and bombardment included before the entire fleet is going down on the planet. The entire scenario is tested and is working.
If you like, I can upload the OXP for you so that you can have a look. Warning ! The package includes various other (harmless) scenarios as well, like a hospital ship sending aid to a planet or the behavior of traders too large to dock.

An example of an idea I've got knocking around that will be absolutely painful to code...

While it doesn't typically destroy or significantly damage ships to do this, the time spent is time we can't fight Thargoids elsewhere with these same ships.
The biggest problem is getting all the ships to the destination system at the same time.
Multiple ships have to travel together, with the size of the convoys based on the urgency, danger, and distance from the starting system.
To start the route, the lead ship jumps to a nearby system.
The other ships in the convoy then use the wormhole that creates -- instead of burning their own fuel to jump on their own.
Freighters do this all the time with their non-jump-capable escorts.
After all the ships are through the wormhole, they organize in preparation of making their next jump along the route.
The lead ship is swapped out for another ship that has sufficient fuel and can fight unassisted at least briefly while the rest of the convoy follows through its wormhole to join it.
Then that new lead ship jumps to the next system along the route.
The process continues until the convoy's destination is reached.
This way each jump only consumes the witchspace fuel of 1 ship.
Some extra ships are often included to deal with contingencies, but we are spread much too thin to do this regularly.
Large Navy convoys have crossed entire Galaxy Charts in this manner without ever docking at a station or sun-skimming to refuel.
Only observers near the witchpoint buoys of the systems traveled might see their passage.
Crossing the Great Rift in Galaxy Chart 7 to reach the large cut-off region has for a very long time been an open secret used by large trading corporations, the military, ...and smugglers from what I've heard.

Other ships in the convoy are then able to jump from that interstellar point to a system across the Great Rift.
The bugs seem to have caught on that we're doing this regularly, because we sometimes have to fight a sizable Thargoid warship force at these interstellar locations...and ships have been lost or damaged in these fights, though fortunately not entire military convoys so far.
We'd like to be able to quickly send a smaller force that is less likely attract attention of both the bugs and various system factions that seem out to cause chaos while we're not around.
Ideally, just 1 ship...but until now that was deemed too risky even for our fast Asps.
An independent explorer, initially without funds from us, discovered additional paths across the Great Rift.
The best such paths offer savings for our logistics.
The yearly expeditions to "unreachable" systems using multiple Galactic Hyperdrives has a very high cost -- often via a Behemoth due to its cargo capacity and ability to act as a ship carrier. We cannot afford to send a Behemoth alone, so it may have a small fleet with it.
A partial payoff comes from deliveries of Galactic Hyperdrives at far above normal market prices and transportation of stranded people to the next Galaxy Chart region for a fee.
We even buy up some ships for cheap that we later refurbish and resell.

Lots of error messages on my AppleMac (hahaha! Surprised?)
GalNavXT-ship_script.js is part of the Galactic Navy XT and actually could be ignored. Just some effects should be missing when doing so.
Your PNG loading warnings on the other hand baffle me, I am using the exact files for years without any problems, so this seems to be a Mac problem (agaIn). Let me have a look if I can tinker these textures so that even a Mac accepts them.

You can't, the shiplibrary.plist is a copy from the Holy Witchspace Guard WIP and not adapted to the ships of this OXP. Please keep in mind that the entire package is unfinished and still a WIP. I probably will separate it in 3 – 4 smaller OXP's, like Lambda Hospital, Lamda Traders, Lambda Navy, ...

Oh, I thought this poll was "how did you start playing Oolite", but straight away everyone went off on an unrelated tangent talking about Navies and suchlike. So now I'm confused - do I tell you that I found Oolite in 2013 (before E:D, I think), and was immediately hooked and amazed by its immersiveness? I came up for air several months later after bloating 1.80 -- a very nice version --with OXPs and even trying to mod some ships myself.
Having only lurked on this board before, I came back in earnest in 2020 and learned Javascript by osmosis, finally being able to produce the OXPs FE Ships, Elite Trader, Cargo Containers, and the GETter HUD.
Another break (nearly 2 years) and then back I came.
Though I did buy Elite:Dangerous, I have never actually played it, and don't think I ever will.
Edit: BTW, wouldn't it perhaps be a good idea to move this poll to its own separate topic on the BB, changing the title etc, so that it might attract more voters? (I guess only an Admin could do this).

So: What, Reval, do you think would be valuable OXPs to add to Oolite? What would you like to be able do in the game which you currently can't - but which would be OXP-able?

It's a sad fact that most of the things I - and I'm sure many others - would like to see in their 'ideal Oolite' are just those that would require modifying the core code. The ability to vary the hyperjump radius in JS, for example, so one's ships could have different ranges a la Frontier/FFE or OXPs to alter the range at will. Would definitely like to make longer single jumps and have an assortment of hyperdrives available with different ranges.
I'd like the ability to look 'long range' at other systems, to determine which ones to exploit as future milk-runs. I mean the ability to view their market prices. Is this already possible in JS? If so, I'd want to try making an OXP that could let you do that.
But on the whole I've been more than satisfied for years with what there is already, and I hardly ever catch myself thinking 'oh if only we had...', because nearly everything one could wish for now is already there in the form of OXPs. That's really quite amazing. I know of very few, if any, other space-centric games that give as much to do and explore, and in so many varied ways, as Oolite. I don't hanker for improved graphics, because the graphics are already superb and immersive. Since I am not--and never have been--into multiplayer, I don't think we need that either.
Freedom is all - and Oolite as we have it now is freedom.
I'll come back to edit this if I think of anything else.

What newcomers really need, I imagine, is a guide, or walkthrough (several different walkthroughs) of what to do step by step after Lave, firstly as a trader.
