So, in Oolite 1.77, the Rock Hermits are different. And there are flashing lights (!) at the back of the docking tunnel. I'm playing with orbits and maybe because of that, things are often cast into shadow.
So I'd located a Rock Hermit and was approaching it from a distance. Everything was deepest black, but I could see the lights at the back of the RH docking tunnel, so I went for it. I was too fast, at too steep an angle and too close (which was why I could see the lights). Bang! The first time I've died docking with an RH for over a year!

Re: Oolite Darwin Awards
Is it just my fat fingers and dodgy coordination, or is docking with Leviathans, Behemoths and such like Naval megaships a particularly good way to get to press the space bar?
I'm sure they know where I am and deliberately veer to one side at the last possible moment. Even when I'm squeaky clean.

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Deep Space Dredgers are notorious for this as well. Be sure the following code appears in the offending ship's shipdata.plist so that you can <Shift+C> your way onboard.RockDoctor wrote: ↑Sun Sep 18, 2022 6:52 pmIs it just my fat fingers and dodgy coordination, or is docking with Leviathans, Behemoths and such like Naval megaships a particularly good way to get to press the space bar?

Code: Select all
"allows_fast_docking" = yes;

It's alright, I found a new way to exercise my space-bar finger. I said rude words to some slimy character in the corner of the dock, ignored my his suggestion that I might clean my minor smuggling record for a measly 10,000 credits and the little toad set me to Fugitive and put an obviously very tempting bounty on my ass.Nite Owl wrote: ↑Sun Sep 18, 2022 11:08 pmDeep Space Dredgers are notorious for this as well. Now, how do I get out of this - docking without clearance is costing me 5kCr a pop, my galactic map is still mostly empty so I'm haemorrhaging credits and reputation as I learn my way around. And exercising the space-bar finger a lot.
I'm going to have to do some research, but don't some pirate bases offer a reputation-cleaning service? I seem to remember being offered that under some dubious counter before.
It's that, or edit the save-game, which would be a whole new voyage of discovery.
Isn't there an OZP that will let you see your bounty? If I'm wearing the bounty away at a reasonable rate, I can live with it for a while, but I don't know if it'll take 10 more jumps or 10,000, to return to some sort of sanity.

Thanks ; I thought I'd seen one, and was about to go searching the Wiki for exactly that.

A galactic jump clears your bounty - as does "Attitude Adjustment".

Note: If you're using the "Bounty System" OXP, you're bounty will *not* decline with each jump.RockDoctor wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 8:26 pmIf I'm wearing the bounty away at a reasonable rate, I can live with it for a while, but I don't know if it'll take 10 more jumps or 10,000, to return to some sort of sanity.
