Took me a while to go through most of the references, the only weak link I would argue of is the Fast Folk (from the comments I could gather at least; besides the Culture series, I didn't read any of the titles myself, to be honest). Certainly a Culture Mind (wrapped in one of their ships) is one of the answers I was looking for.

Unless you consider Kirk's Star Trek as being Start Trek 0 (or maybe just Star Trek), the one you're talking about should be Star Trek 4.
