Re: THE DEATH OF OOLITE > ELITE DANGEROUS
That is one of the reasons Oolite has managed to be so popular and remain in peoples hearts for a long time. The core game is great by itself but it is also balanced enough to allow for a wide range of diversity through oxp's so each person can have a Ooniverse that they desire. As long as that balance and diversity remains (it will as far as I can see) then it will continue to have a place.

I think the major feature of Oolite is that it runs on the 3 major desktop platforms. How many other games can claim that?

Limit Theory will be a serious contender.Tricky wrote:I think the major feature of Oolite is that it runs on the 3 major desktop platforms. How many other games can claim that?
Personally I think that the two other major features of Oolite are equally, if not more important: (a) that it's free, and (b) the practically unlimited moddability, read: OXPs.

And I recently bought all the games of the X-series so far in a humble weekly sale. I'll never play Oolite again.

Unreal Tournament 2004, for one.. Here at home it's currently running on all 3 platforms. And that's natively, no Wine or emulators required. Admittedly, it took some research, lateral thinking and fiddling to get it working on modern hardware and OSs, but it was do-able.. dealing with the Mac switch-over from PPC to Intel was the biggest hassle. That did require the temporary use of Wine as an intermediate step.Tricky wrote:I think the major feature of Oolite is that it runs on the 3 major desktop platforms. (but yes, I know you meant space-type games)
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I'd say "challenge accepted" and try to make a tough facial expression, but I don't want to keep Norby waiting - I wanted to make a demo for the Towbar OXP because I liked it so much.Fatleaf wrote:I give you three days..... topsCorny wrote:And I recently bought all the games of the X-series so far in a humble weekly sale. However, if you'd challenge me to play X3 for more than three days (well not ALL the time of course), I'll gladly accept that

Well I have had the original first X game since it came out and still have not completed it. What is that 13 years? Maybe one dayFatleaf wrote:I give you three days..... topsCorny wrote:And I recently bought all the games of the X-series so far in a humble weekly sale. I'll never play Oolite again.

I hammered my way through X-BTF (on CD) in very little time. The best bit - the very first launch!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Yes I agree Cody, the start was interesting, then slowly I kept being distracted by other games until the point I stopped playing it. More often than not it was an Elite game that did the deed. One of these days though I will complete it!....or not

Re: THE DEATH OF OOLITE > ELITE DANGEROUS
Hi guys I have only just found oolite and I have to say I love it. It's strength comes from being so easily modded in the form of oxps created by fans like yourselves, to me this gives oolite a range of creativity that commercialised games cannot attain. I loved the elite series of games back in the eighties but have never found a replacement since their passing, I have bought X Terran conflict but it does not have the same feel and it was only on Wednesday evening that I found oolite. I spent 2 days experimenting with combinations of oxps and now I have a fantastic game that looks a treat on my big monitor. It looks and plays great and for me the playability blows X Terran conflict out of the water. I am pretty sure I will buy ED when it comes out but I cant see it replacing oolite.
Many thanks to all you developers and oxp writers

It also has a ridiculous amount of playtime, my usual savegames last around 6 months (and I usually play every day)

Re: THE DEATH OF OOLITE > ELITE DANGEROUS
Oolite = awesome
ED = could be awesome; kinda looks like its gonna turn out not to be Elite.
I like the look of the game and the fact that it has multiplayer but... it seems like its going to be alot different and could just turn out to be a genric space game :/
Hopefully it doesnt im looking forward to it
But Oolite will always stay in my heart as one of the best if not most Space Exploration Game(with lots of other stuff todo)
