I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid we can't do that.

I just spotted this sig on slashdot - it made me chuckle.

Meanwhile, at the Acoustic tent, the Bootleg Beatles played a Stones riff and commented: "Sign of a good band - you've got to know when to split up."

The more I read that the more enlightenment comes to me. It almost makes sense now, maybe after another 100 readings.

I got it in one reading.. Apple just patented the Control Panel.

(reserving my opinion because we don't allow that kind of language here)

It's probably not just a "control panel" because it involves an "application of a portable consumer electronic device," and it's more or less implied that the "configurable environment" is distinct from the device.

Most people would call this type of system a "remote control app", but if Apple called it by its simple name, the patent officials would likely just reject it as trivial.

I wonder if this filing was related to the iTunes Remote app...

It's for 'automotive environment settings' apparently.

My experience is that the US patent office don't reject anything, no matter how braindead the application is!

Which somehow begs the question why not some smart US denizens of these boards go ahead and patent all sorts of mundane things, and let Amazon, Apple & Cie. bleed in license fees when they attempt to do the same?

Smivs starts checking the patent files for:-
"A mechanical or electro-mechanical device for opening and/or closing an electrical circuit which is operated by pressing a button or moving a small lever."
Well, you never know..... :P

That sounds like a quote from my "I dreamed about ED" thread on the ED forum. Not read that quote on there yet! (I always check the Oolite forum before heading over to ED lol)
