Since I mostly read this forum at work, anything that reduces the glaring obviously not work related stuff would be appreciated. Banners I don't see as being a problem, but big flashy things in avatars and sigs can be a bit messy and distracting.
Well, the easiest thing to do would be disabling avatars and signatures in the display options of your control panel, wouldn't it?

My opinion is that since we can personally turn off both banner and signature then I would be rather hesitant to make any set rule. But having guidelines for people would be good though.

While personally I have not seen a particularly distracting or annoying banner in signature - I can appreciate those that do find them a little excessive, especially on devices which are not desktop computers. Linking to content would be my preference - avatars should really be sufficient.
