The precision key isn't that much use in a close-in dogfight, but it can be useful for picking off ships at range before or after.

Re: [UPDATE] keyboardCobra v1.2 to aid keyboard playing
I haven't had many issues with the rates, and haven't bothered installing this oxp, but what I have done is finally find the keyboard mapping plist and change the yaw buttons with the roll buttons so that the arrow keys work like I expect and they are all under one hand, so that I can now use my other hand for the roll when coming in for docking.

I hope you worked with a copy of keyconfig.plist, and saved it in AddOns/Config/, rather than messing with the original file..

If it's an encouragement to you: I've been playing various versions of Elite since 1985 and Oolite since 2006, and have made it to ELITE in every one of them, and I have never even once used anything but the keyboard. Seriously, who needs a joystick (or mouse) anyway?Bogatyr wrote:A joystick isn't really an option for me, can one really dogfight the harder opponents with just the keyboard?

I won't go so far as to say I 'need' it.. but it certainly makes things a lot more fun..Smivs wrote:Er, meCommander McLane wrote:Seriously, who needs a joystick anyway?
(not to mention "immersive".. I mean, seriously.. who thinks that a thousand years from now, spacecraft will be guided by somebody tapping a keyboard?)

Re: [UPDATE] keyboardCobra v1.2 to aid keyboard playing
I expect I could get used to keyboard control given time but I used to play with a joystick on the c64 so I'm just used to it, and after all these years I don't think the transition would be easy.

Re: [UPDATE] keyboardCobra v1.2 to aid keyboard playing
I can use both (even mouse control too), and keyboard control can be very precise... but the 'stick is my preference (has been since BBC Elite).
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

I'd like to see them dog fighting an Imperial Courier with those controls. "Geordi, turn left, no right, roll, fire, bugger, left, TURN LEFT." Press space Commander.GGShinobi wrote:Well... have a look at these future space ship controls

Re: [UPDATE] keyboardCobra v1.2 to aid keyboard playing
Thanks for the encouragement! I'm already getting decent at the long range sniping with the keyboard (in fact I think the keyboard is the only way to go for long distance shooting, I recall I used it even when playing with a stick) but that the up-close dogfighting is still a challenge where you need to maintain an "in between" turn rate to keep the target in your sights.Commander McLane wrote:If it's an encouragement to you: I've been playing various versions of Elite since 1985 and Oolite since 2006, and have made it to ELITE in every one of them, and I have never even once used anything but the keyboard. I also like the idea of switching the yaw and the roll keys, I'll try that too.
