I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Re: OXP idea - Holographic Ship's AI Avatar
Excellent ideas all around, many thanks! With enough modification and some free stock photos I believe I've got enough to go on! ... Anyone got a list of races?
Got all turned around, lost my nav connection... Where am I now?
Re: OXP idea - Holographic Ship's AI Avatar
There are nine main categories in Galcop space:
Birds, Colonials, Felines, Frogs, Humanoids, Insects, Lizards, Lobsters, Rodents
(Ten if you count Thargoids, who may or may not have anything at all in common with the Galcop Insects)
All categories except the Colonials have a wide variation stated in the planetary descriptions (e.g. "Red Slimy Lizards" or "Blue Horned Lobsters"). Whether this is because they are actually separate species or it simply describes local fashions is unspecified (it's not impossible that Humanoids and Colonials are the same species, either).
The full description of a species is: "[size] [colour] [feature] species" except for "Colonials" who are always described with the single adjective "Human".
Size = (blank) / Large / Small / Fierce
Colour = (blank) / Green / Red / Yellow / Blue / Black / Harmless
Feature = (blank) / Slimy / Bug-Eyed / Horned / Bony / Fat / Furry
All sizes and colours are used to describe inhabitants of every non-Colonial species. Not all features are (e.g. Lizards are never Bony, Fat or Furry, while Felines are never Slimy, Horned, or Bug-Eyed): if you look through the [wiki]Oolite_planet_list[/wiki] you'll get the idea.
EDIT: full list of inhabitant descriptions

That... is quite a few. Fortunately I can pretty much disregard sizing as it's gonna be facial representation for the most part.

Perhaps, like ship textures and 'verts for YAH, we could have a little spin off thread for 128x128 Oolite Species Avatars? Seems silly to leave it to just one member (willing and talented though they may be) when perhaps there's a whole pool of volunteers to draw upon (they just don't realise they're going to volunteer yet!)

A link to a stock set of avatars, including Navi, Malcolm Reynolds, and a set of four pictures for a ship's AI avatar.

I gave the bugeyed three eyes
Maybe there is a way to autocolour, autovariate images? In that case you have only to do the main races and then let some image-generator make variances. See pioneer, and OpenTTD for example.

Excellent; the regular and bugeyed birds have been completed. All that remains for them is zipping and posting on my Box account.
