I'm abandoning my work on Famous Planets....working from the base textures hasn't produced results i'm happy with so i'm going to concentrate on doing new textures for system redux and leave Famous Planets for PA Groove who I believe is working on this atm?

My compliments to you PA Groove...Famous planets is far more challenging than producing generic Planets

@ CaptKev...thanks for the code..it works, i just have to do another 60 planet textures, 32 moons and all the rest lol
But be aware that the code CaptKev has posted is incompatible with the newer versions. E.g. it does not texture the target systems, it won't work with OXPConfig, the optional exclusion for Lave, Diso and Tianve is not there anymore and other scripts which have communicated with SystemRedux won't do it anymore.

Ok, thanks for the info...guess i'll have to stick to modding the latest release of system redux for now then. I'm removing Famous planets until it's updated as some of the textures really look bad in comparison now.

@ CaptKev...if you want me to share any of the work i've done on planetary textures for your work updating system redux, i'm happy to do so

My first attempt at a Gas Giant

Image

Can anyone explain to me why the planets are rendered in the galactic map screen rotating at an angle off equatorial? and is this due to be fixed at some point?

Also, are there plans to make them rotate within the game?

Just because it looks better.

They do rotate in the game - unrealistically quickly. Just sit back and watch for a while.

I like that purple gas giant; there aren't enough gas planet textures around. Please upload the textures you've created so far, so we can start using them sooner rather than later. There's really no reason to wait until you've got a full set of some arbitrarily chosen number like 8, 32, 64 or 256 (or 2048).

Very very pretty..

I suddenly feel really sad to have been born so early in the days of space travel that we have only ever seen 3 real gas giants.

Meanwhile, you can produce as many of those as you like. :-)

They're very pretty, gas giants:

I'm in the process of checking the textures i've done...i've completed enough to replace the current system redux textures but some of them need a little tweaking so once i'm happy with them, i will provide a download link for them.

Give me a couple of days to double check things...i'm a bit of a perfectionist and they are not all up to my high standards yet...a little tweaking of the layers in the .psd files should do the trick hopefully.

If you would like to donate a planet to the shady-planets effort I would be most appreciative. The present state of shady-planets supports diffuse, specular, city light and normal maps (cube maps) . It would be great to have some more examples in there, currently there is a povray planet and an earth with shaders by griff.

Here's a download link for one example...it includes the program used to generate the raw texture, the photoshop .psd file, the texture.png file and if you instal the texture generator you will also be able to see the normal map, shadow map, lighting map and more for the base texture

and here's a preview pic

OOPS...just looked at the shady planets example .oxp and i realized that i'm not using cube-maps so this may not work? I did say i have little to no programming knowledge.

Ok, i've finally finished an initial release for System Redux Replacement Textures

Just unzip the two files and copy/paste the contents into your System Redux textures folder (I would recommend backing up system redux textures before doing so)

You will need a fairly decent set-up to run these textures as the files are rather large

Please take screenshots if you find any errors...I've tried to check them but I may have missed something...I will fix and upload a new download for any errors reported

Pt1 download http://jumbofiles.com/sr4zw4s832yl

Pt2 download http://jumbofiles.com/7krqc8btu60l

I have had to split this into 2 downloads due to the sizes of the files....just over 1 gig in total

They look amazing under 1.76.1, not so much with a trunk build (especially from a distance) with the (partially finished) new planets code, but that goes for the original textures as-well. Also in trunk it appears my system can't cope with texturing multiple bodies with textures this size as the moons were untextured. Fine with 1.76.1

Thanks...i'm glad they work well for the current incarnation....when the new version of Oolite is released, hopefully, either PA groove, submersible or yourself will have done some new textures and if not then i'll try and do some new versions possibly using cube-mapping
