I didn't see much sneering to be honest Mandoman. I saw a lovely model but a model, as others pointed out that will never work in its current form inside Oolite (short of running on a super PC), now they may have done it in their usual flippant, off the cuff way, but that's all.

If you need a helpful suggestion then experiment with optimisation - work out what you can cull without affecting the essence of your ship. This is a really good thing to practice, as even a super fast machine will appreciate a low poly model.

Yeah, I really screwed up. I've gone into other ships I made at the end, and cleaned them up so that the poly count was way lower. Just figured I'd do the same with the truck. When I went to look into it, there wasn't anything to clean up, and if I try merging a bunch of vertices, it'll really screw it up. Your advice is very sound, DaddyHoggy. The truck will probably end up with turbines that are not so detailed. Too bad.

All right, my apologies for loosing my cool. I knew you were right, and it pissed me off. Staer9, I learned a lot from your tutorial, so I'm sorry for my hard words.

mandoman, mi amigo - some advice: next time you want to make an angry/ratty post, don't hit 'Submit'. Hit 'Preview' instead, then go play your mandolin for a couple of minutes, then read through your prospective post. Does it need to be said, and is it justified? Maybe play a few more chords?

The mandolin is such a sweet instrument... have you heard David Grisman? Brilliant!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

You know, instead of laughing at other people's attempts, maybe you should be offering some helpful solutions to problems you see in their work. I guess when you reach a certain level, that must give you the right to sneer at what others do. Not sure why you even started that Blender tutorial.
My appologies Mandoman, It wasn't meant to be offensive. It is a stunning model and the detail on those engines is incredible, (and as someone who sells 3d models, those jets are things that would surely sell) I was just joking about it's complexity.

Sorry

Yeah, put the pics back up Mandoman!
It was a cool ship - looked like a flying Hummer :)

(I modelled 25 parrots in a cage once, but that didn't work...too many polys) :P

I put it back up, but this time with a pic of what I've done since yesterday. Doesn't look as good, but the counts are down.

I can't take credit for the design. Jadanrayn drew some very detailed pics for me to go on, so I just did what looked like should be done. I wouldn't know a true turbine from a cigar, normally.

a first could be : forget about round shapes. In most cases visually to me there is no let-down in having hexagonal or octagonal instead of spheric shapes.
E.g this fuel tanker concept - I think it would work just as well with say octagonal tanks fitted.

Brilliant!
my favourite song of his.

There exists an even better performance recording - from Belfast I think, saw it on arte (TV channel) - but I could not find it on youtoube, not without voice-over comments. :(

Please forgive me if I don't agree with your ideas about no rounding certain things. Everything has it's place. :)

As a matter of fact, I HAVE heard of, heard, and seen David Grisman live. He's funky, no doubt. I can't prove it, but I bet I've seen more mandolin players live than you knew existed, and I won't even talk about the number of recordings I have of mandolin in Bluegrass, Jazz, and Country......and even Rock.
