8-Bit Apocalypse Updates

Post by Svengali »

Renegade Viper, Grass Snake, Remorse of Conscience and Farstar Murderer are updated.

[EliteWiki] RVandGS
[EliteWiki] Remorse_Of_Conscience_v2
[EliteWiki] Far_Star_Murderer

Models are very low poly and it was interesting to see how much textures can do in combination with the materials entries.

Thanks to maik for keeping the OXP List up-to-date. Great job!

Likewise for keeping the ships up-to-date. This OXP had last been touched 7 years ago!

Very, very nice textures there. Lovely to see some of the "classics" being brought up to date!

Preetty... Me wanna test-fly one!
You know those who, having been mugged and stabbed, fired, dog run over, house burned down, wife eloped with best friend, daughters becoming prostitutes and their countries invaded - still say that "all is well"?
I'm obviously not one of them.

Those are some nice lookin' ships... I love the Grass Snake. (so much for a core game, I'm already flying an ubership again).

Yes, they are all in the 'native' range and suitable for beginners. Some of them are even cannonfodder for experienced Commanders. The player versions are weaker than the 'ironass' Cobbie, this wasn't touched in the update process. Fixing some smaller problems like wrong AI declarations was the initial motivation when I started to take a look.

For me every ship was interesting and I've concentrated on a different aspect.
- For the Grass Snake I've tried to 'use' the checkerboard as bumpmap, baked into the diffusemap with some specular effects.
- The Renegade Viper needed a grounding before projecting the original map onto the model. Here the normalmap is the important bit.
- For the RoC I've tried to give it a light satin look which gets visible when the ships moves, specially backlighted.
- And the Farstar should get a pimped/more detailed look, but still in the same scheme as the original.

Oolite is pretty customisable when it comes to textures, even with lowres maps a lot of things are possible. And we are heading for a stable release, so I thought it's time to polish some of them a little bit. I've learned so much just by taking a look in older OXPs and keeping them alive will give new Users/OXPers a good base to start with.

Well done Svengali. :D
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

He - thanks. Experimenting with new ways of texturing is quite some fun. And Eric alone can't update all OXPs - although the list of his updates for older OXPs is amazing. If I get this right Fatleaf is also working on Assassins. Yeehaaa.

You got that right. It is a single extra hit as an add on to Assassins. It is going better than I expected it to go and wont be too long now. I have tried to capture the flavour of Assassins yet have a different mission than one you have done already.

I also have LittleBears permission to make an Assassins II. But let's just see how Victim 11 is received before I jump into that one.
Find out about the early influences of Fatleaf here. Also his OXP's!
