That has potential RyanHoots. :)
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

Thanks, Mandoman. I'm deciding if it should be a Gunship or an escort for a larger ship I have in production... I need to post a screenshot of that ship.

I have another ship oxp that I've nearly finished. I've even got it working in the game. The only problem I'm having is getting the game to use the texture file that is suppose to be associated with the ship. It just shows up pink all over on the screen. Looks like a skinned bird. Here is what it's suppose to look like:

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/4098/uhupic.png

If I ever get the texture to attach to the ship, I'll probably ask someone to test pilot it for me. It's fairly big. I think bigger than a Cobra Mk III, so it has a great cargo hold. Forward and aft lasers, and a really good defensive grid make it a formidable ship to pirate. It goes just a bit faster than the Cobra Mk III, but that's only because it doesn't have to use energy for port, and starboard weapons. I kind of made it look a bit like a bird, as the name of it is the Uhu, which is owl in German.

could be a typo, check your log and there should be an entry saying "couldn't find texture" or such like. other than that, i've had an issue where i've had a texture name assigned in my modeller - that name is included in the DAT file. i changed the name of the texture in Oolite and despite all the naming being correct in shipdata the game still wouldn't assign it because the DAT file had a different texture named.

Hmmm, I think I did change the texture file a couple of days ago, but it was an older texture version of the same ship, having the same .dat name, so I thought it would work. I guess I might have to re-export the ship from Blender, after making a connection between the Blender model, and the Blender texture for that model. I had to do that once for the SunBat when I removed the extra lasers.

By the way, I got the exhaust, laser, and every other position error on the SunBat figured out, and it looks pretty darn close to how it should be. I was able to retract all four of the earlier lasers back into the Blender model, and then was able to make a forward laser on it. I couldn't decide on a decent spot for an aft laser, though. It's up and running nicely now. Thanks for your help in the process, Killer Wolf. :)

re the texture, as long as the texture name in the .dat file is exactly the same as the actual texture's name it will work.
So if your texture is called 'mytexture.png' and the .dat file refers to 'mytexture.png' it will work.

I think I found the problem. Have you ever had two mesh upwraps combine into one? I think that is what has happened in this case. I opened up Blender, and pulled up the texture .png file in question, and it has two fronts, ans two backs, and who knows how many other doubles. to make things worse, the duplicates are of different iterations of the same ship, so they don't match at all. Sheesh, beginners are such a pain, eh?

Ha, you're ahead of me on this mandoman. I've never even tried to do a model for myself, so un-wrapping etc is still a mystery to me. :)

You're kidding. Man, you have GOT to try it. There's nothing cooler than making your own ship, straightening all the vertex' out, painting, and then oxping and flying it. With your skill in texturing, you could take it to the next level. Man, I wish I knew even a tenth of what you know of the shading, and texturing. It's going to take some time to get anywhere in that direction, though, for sure. Smivs, make your own ship. It would probably blow us all away. :D

Yeah, that is always a factor, isn't it. Oh well, I'll just keep duking it out with your versions of the original ship set.....at least the ones that are pirates. :D

The Diqudi Royal Cruiser, affectionately called "the ROC". This ship will be featured in a chart three mission someday. It can just barely traverse through standard docking ports.

Very nice ship, dude. That thing looks like it could kick some butt, and then fly away with several tons of booty. Are you a bounty hunter? That's what I do. I WAS using a Merlin, and still do sometimes, but now I use my SunBat. It's nearly as good as the Merlin, but not quite as fast. :)

Looks good with what appears as an observation deck on top. Very nice CaptSolo. :)
