Heh... sometimes I like to think that the word is out... that the Oolite forum is a challenge for them (fantasy, of course).

In idle moments I've been browsing the older pages of this very thread.

How about a CAPTCHA based on ship identification? It'd require a very special sweatshop slave...
Probably impractical, but would be great fun!

Nice idea, but as you say, probably impractical.
Needs something though... I've set a personal best today of twenty-two, so far. Katana needs oiling.

I just had a brilliant idea...: The nonCAPTCHA CAPTCHA!

It's using the CAPTCHA image as usual, but the accompanying text reads "Please ignore CAPTCHA image. The correct word to enter is the name of the game that inspired the game whose bb you are now registering on." Someone could probably phrase it better, but you get the idea.

On the face of it that is a very good idea.

Somebody implemented a CAPTCHA between last night and this morning. When I logged in, I was diverted to a page with a CAPTCHA and prompted to type the two words (which weren't even known words for me).

Is this going to happen every time now? Or every once in a while?

This is odd, doesn't happen to me.

I just logged out and in again. It didn't happen again. I haven't deleted any cookies since last night, so I'm wondering what it was.

Just logged out and in again to test (I usually use keep logged in), and I to got the Captcha screen, and the quote:

Captcha screen wrote:
You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts. In addition to your username and password you now also have to solve the CAPTCHA below.

So presumably in this case the maximum number of log-in attempts was 0. But if it keeps the bots a little more at bay, then so be it.

Since I have the log in automagically option set, I hardly ever log in. But just to test, I logged out, then tried to log in again. I then got a message saying I had exceeded the allowed number of login attempts and got the CAPTCHA. It then turned out I had actually forgotten my password^, so I sent for a new one. Returning to the login screen: No CAPTCHA. Weirdness.

^The forgotten password was not the reason for the CAPTCHA in the first place. I use Opera's password manager to take care of such stuff.

Same here....one click and I'm logged-on. Very easy and never has any problems.
C.R. I use the Opera irc client for the Oolite chatroom as well...same thing, just click and I'm logged on there as well.
