Hubble's view of 'Hanny’s Voorwerp'
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Wow! That's pretty cool. I'm getting back into my Astronomy - my 9yr old is going her Stargazing badge in Brownies!

This is good... get her interested early. I bought my first telescope and Norton's Star Atlas when I was nine or ten.DaddyHoggy wrote:my 9yr old is going her Stargazing badge in Brownies!
Galaxy Zoo and its offshoots are amazing citizen science... find something really odd, and have it named after you.

She got a National Geographic Planetarium for Christmas - but it eats batteries and has no input for an optional PSU - she falls asleep watching it go round and round on her ceiling and by the time we go to bed the batteries are flat...El Viejo wrote:This is good... get her interested early. Pity they don't do a solar-powered one.DaddyHoggy wrote:...National Geographic Planetarium for Christmas - but it eats batteries and has no input for an optional PSU - she falls asleep watching it go round and round on her ceiling and by the time we go to bed the batteries are flat...

For those that don't speak Dutch: "voorwerp" is just the Dutch word for "Object".El Viejo wrote:

Yeah… better than calling it ‘Hanny’s mind-blowingly strange, unique and weird thing’.Eric Walch wrote:

Hmm… how massive a trader do you need for the wormhole to be 100,000 light years across? I guess it was hauling neutronium.Eric Walch wrote:We know better; it is just the wormhole that was left behind by a leaving trader.

Excellent!DaddyHoggy wrote:Wow! That's pretty cool. I'm getting back into my Astronomy - my 9yr old is going her Stargazing badge in Brownies!
Oddly enough, I've got a Brownie Stargazer badge. Our astronomical society has helped a number of cub, scout, brownie and guide groups achieve their badges (shame Newbury is too far to go!). I got awarded a badge as a thankyou (along with a £15 gift voucher for my trouble).
We had 140+ people visit us for 'Stargazing Live' on the weekend. Young and old alike. V cool.
Cheers,
Drew.

I followed your pics on FB - very cool indeed - poo-poo! to all those who said SGL wouldn't create a groundswell of interest amongst the general public.drew wrote:Excellent!DaddyHoggy wrote:Wow! Well, a Rock Hermit will leave a wormhole that'll last for 848 minutes...Ahruman wrote:Hmm… how massive a trader do you need for the wormhole to be 100,000 light years across? I guess it was hauling neutronium.
Re: Hubble's view of 'Hanny’s Voorwerp'
May anyone tell me why the name has not been made up in a Douglas Adams theme? Someone named Arkel finds a giant green snooze in outer space - how could they not name it appropriately?
