Ship maintenance

Post by Bugbear »

I was doing a bit of zombie topic browsing (while I was supposed to be working) and I came across the following old topic...

Outrageous charges

...and it got me thinking...apart from broken equipment that happens as a result of combat (or sloppy docking in a Boa :P  ), do laser and incidental hits have any other effect on your maintenance charges?

I noticed while doing LOTS of cargo contracts in a Python that I never seemed to have the spare time to do maintenance on the ship. Seemed like every time I crossed the galaxy, I had to do that at least once even if I avoided all fights and docked cleanly.

It still needs fresh oil and filters every 12 months or 10 000 light-years

No. Your ship simply degrades randomly over time (of course you can blame it on laser hits and energy damage, but the game code doesn't calculate so sophisticatedly).

The offer of maintenance is made as soon as the "degradation factor" has hit a certain value.

Does getting the maintenance at a TL14 or 15 station help boost the resale value more than a TL5?
Or is that random/fixed?

I think it's random/fixed.

But for reasons of immersion we usually give the advice here on the boards to maintain your ship at a TL as high as possible.

Nah, I think I'll stick to getting my Boa serviced at Dodgy Bros. Ship Botherers ("Where there aint no problem duct tape can't fix").

Coriolis station, Lerela, Chart 2

The amount you pay is a fixed proportion of ship value. The value after servicing is simply reset to 100%. It shouldnt make any difference who services the ship, or how long you leave it before servicing.

Not servicing a ship does have a negative impact, both on things going wrong, and on resale value.

Ship repair is 1% of the ship value, if I recall.

I don't mind the Elite MOT costs, as it beats the hell out of
Frontier's 20000 CR overhaul! And when you think about
it, maintaining a massive trader or battleship would not be
in any way cheap - Imagine welding the hull of a Boa!
