That can't be a 1950s edition, though, surely ... it's got to be from the 1970s. It's 4-colour, for a start ... and apart from anything else there's a ribbon cable in there!

Aha! Got it. It's the "police procedural" bit that gave it away. It's

(and the first Penguin edition was from 1966, so I'm going to maintain my assumption that this one is a 1970s cover!)

Hm, OTOH, I just bought a series of six books, inspired by Clarke's short stories.

All book titles refer one of his stories. And the main figure is a young woman.

Hint: the 'meta' title for all the books has a (real) planet's name in it.
