Can you identify this?

Post by JazHaz »

Just came across this strange looking object:

Image

When I radar mapped it, it identifies as a Boa Class Cruiser. However it looks like an asteroid, in that its roughly globular, but has a texture that I've not seen before. Weirdly the target system doesn't put a box around it.

So I try shooting it. Imagine my horror to find my shields being depleted, and I also get an offender tag (probably from that police ship on my scanner)! I think it's me!:

Image

Have I come across a strange spacial anomaly, that reflects like a fairground mirror, ie distorts?

Hah! You've fallen victim to the weird, "Help! I'm killing myself!" bug...

Lemme guess.. you're flying a Boa Class Cruiser..

Despite the disguise (it can look like almost any object, but ID's as the same type of ship you're flying) you were shooting at a strange reflected image of yourself. Every time you scored a hit, you took a hit, right?

So far as I know, nobody has ever made any headway on working out why Oolite occasionally does this.. frustrating, huh?
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Love it… could be straight out of a ‘Star Trek’ episode, some deception arranged by ’Q’.
Fascinating, as Spock would say.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Thats why I called it a spacial anomaly! :) Maybe its not a bug but a feature?

I am not certain, but I always presumed this was caused by the player having an ID of zero, and some incorrectly set up ships not having a properly initialized ID, so they end up with a zero.

Sounds logical.. so I guess then the question becomes, "how does/can it happen that (very rarely) a ship/object does not have its ID properly initialised?"

Give it time.. it's only happened to me once..

It's happened to me twice now! It happened again in the next session to my original report!

it would be nice if someone who sees this could get some info from the target inspector or javascript console.
