That looks very nice indeed, a bit sinister but with the glowing blue bits it will look friendly and welcoming, are you planning to dot the hull with 'window lights' or anything? i was thinking that the texture looks alot like city blocks, prehaps it might be cool to scroll some tiny lights along the 'streets'
i think the decision to use less logos works best, should the stations be numbered do you think?, i think there's supposed to be more than one in orbit (although the game will only spawn one station at a time), so some random number decals on them might give the impression you're not always returning to the same station each time you visit the system.

Placing "Hull windows" on the stations will be an enhancement for 1.74. Than the planet could throw a shadow over the station when the planet is between sun and station. Some stations than start to look bad. (Specially the current torus stations look bad when in the shade) With lights stations start to look realistic again when the are placed in the dark.Griff wrote:That looks very nice indeed, a bit sinister but with the glowing blue bits it will look friendly and welcoming, are you planning to dot the hull with 'window lights' or anything? i was thinking that the texture looks alot like city blocks, prehaps it might be cool to scroll some tiny lights along the 'streets'

The scale of the stations means that those blocks are very building-like indeed. I'll have to go back to the texture to check.
I have no idea how to scroll the blue pixels in the shader and no way to test the code. I'll concentrate on extracting the blue from the diffuse map and make some height-maps - then pass it over to you dear griff ;)
Random decals are interesting - theres space for them over the dock in the isoc and coriolis models. Simple grunged shapes, not always English?
Perhaps the isoc could be newer? It appears in very high tech systems.
Lights: the isoc can have rows of lights set into the smooth triangles, probably oriented from the top/bottom corner and to the middle of the opposite face.
The dodo would be harder, which is partly why I was interested in the blue lines version.
The thing that originally attracted me to lights on stations was an effect I noticed in the griff-coriolis - when the sun shone over the lights, they were washed out and you just saw the dimple where they were.
It's my birthday today (8th) so I redid my old katapo model as a feel-good. See the original thread. Now I know how to do it properly of course...
I have another paper due on the 15th - but I'm half way through it, so I should be able to deliver on those stations by Saturday (my time) before I really have to get stuck in.

Ha ha ha.
I have half a mind not to share this with you:
... that is the new katipo in the game - have not tested the shaders yet (have to move it to my laptop to do that). Get the beta oxp at:

Neolite Navy
I have found a version of the Neolite Navy oxp, which seems to be pretty much where I got up to.
I have uploaded it as:
http://www.hbclinux.net.nz/oolite/neolite-navy.oxp.zip
Be warned - this oxp is incomplete and very alpha - but it has all those nice navy ships I've been showing you earlier in the thread. Includes the megaships and the frigates and the military station. Not compatible with behemoth, megaships, or galactic navy.
I'll take a closer look at it later - next week or so - see if I cannot finish it off.

Tested - the uploaded version needs a wee hack: you have to rename the effects map for the body to match the pattern for the others.Simon B wrote:... that is the new katipo in the game - have not tested the shaders yet (have to move it to my laptop to do that).
I have created a better HUD for it - but I'm still tweaking the shaders: maybe a different specular colour? The real-life Katipo reflects a dull red off a black carapace.

Playing Around:
Some time ago I designed a Star Trek ship for a role-playing game. Here it is:
Strangely this is quite polygon-light.
I also had a go designing a custom ship to use griff shaders - this is the basic skin.
The letters and numbers are supposed to be decals and the color would use griffs paint. I figure the actual craft for speed 300 and 50/65T cargo ... drives like a python.
Still not really griff-esque as there don't seem to be enough flat panels for the trademark normalmapping style.

I like the Starfire - and the Valiant (class?) is a good looking Star Trek ship
