@ allikat: In the language usage conventions you are used to there may be the distinction you are making. But as far as the leading English dictionaries are telling me, there is no difference whatsoever in their meaning. It is just a spelling variant. The Oxford dictionary hints that the spelling with "a" may be the North American variant.
