I completely agree about wings. Otherwise it's seems like a sparrow.
The bird has the wasp face because I drew it no so good. I haven't any good source picture and I've never seen any starbirds before, just an ostrich in the Zoo
I like the way the two O's are put to some use, simulating a sun and a planet. I don't know if the idea can be integrated in the other designs because the writing is much smaller. I find the OOLITE name looking strange in all of them, probably because it is a made-up name, I am used to Elite and also, it has an imbalance to it. The OO part is too much for the left side. Maybe something starting from OoLITE could help, maybe with the second o a little bit lower.
PS (Preview Scriptum): Now I see that the first O is actually a wormhole. Anyway, you got the idea.
I think seventh's logo might be improved by removing the "lite" text altogether. The two Os together would be enough. The logo doesn't have to incorporate the full name, after all.

It does, to be a logo. If you remove “lite”, it becomes a symbol. But that’s OK, because what we’re looking for is an icon. :-)

Well, yes, if you're going to be all Greek about it , but the entire word "OOLITE" could be placed under the icon. Not having the word "PENGUIN" scrawled across the penguin's chest hasn't done Penguin Books any harm in the logo-identification stakes.
Although now that I've been looking at various book spines, I realise that there would be a risk of the Oo design looking a bit like the logo for Orbit books ... probably not enough to be concerned about though.
Regarding text: avoiding text in icons is widely considered a good idea, and avoids the balance issue varsator mentioned. Just in case anyone’s considering another entry… ;-)
BTW, I’ve updated the original post with the current icon at 256 × 256, the existence of which I’d apparently forgotten at the time.
