more annoying newbie questions

Post by benjie »

hi there,

i stumbled across oolite a couple of days before, liked it (surprise!) and now i'm facing some questions:

.) the ANA i purchased is just not working. the keyconfig.plist indicates "^" for its use, but i hit "^" (in chart view) and nothing happens. i tried to change the key, but no effect. changing other keys did work, but not this one. might this be a mac thing? anything known about this issue?

.) is it true that no joysticks are supported in MacOS? Neither analog nor digital? (if yes, how could that happen? if no, is there a list of products that reportedly do work?)

thank you for your patience,
benjie

Hi Benjie, welcome to the friendliest board this side of Riedquat! (TM, patent pending) Not sure about number 2, but for number 1, just to check:

a) what version of Oolite are you using?

b) are you pressing ^, or are you pressing 6 – i.e. are you holding down SHIFT?

Edit: it's not looking good for Mac joystick support at present ...

Edit again: although Nubo (same thread as above) reported the ability to map keyboard controls onto a joystick using Gamepad Companion.

benjie: Have you actually bought the ANA equipment? It does not work on the default Jameson/Mk3/100Cr configuration, you need to pay 2500Cr to get it.
(Note to self: learn to read first, then post)

This is quite unusual and I think it's the first time we have a report like this for Mac. Can you post Latest.log after having started the game with Shift pressed? Have you tried to edit keyconfig.plist at any point?

Regarding joysticks, this thread contains some useful information. But bottomline is no, there is no native joystick support on the Mac.

I'm not a coder and i don't know what is the problem with Oolite and joysticks on Mac. When compiling VICE, mac joystick support is added via external HID utilities and library.

I did try to change settings in keyconfig.plist, and successfully for other keys, but ANA never worked, no matter which key it was assigned to.

And sorry, I cannot post "latest.log" for I have no idea what it is or where to find it - but i will try if you give me a hint where to search (but keep in mind i'm noob not only to oolite, but to computers in general).

thx

For Mac OS X look here: ~/Library/Logs/Oolite/Latest.log (that is, in your home folder, open the folder named Library, then Logs, then Oolite).

Just a thought that occurred to me.. you are trying to use the ANA on the F6-F6 Long Range Chart, aren't you? It won't have any effect on the F6 Short Range Chart.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

i successfully identified the log file (small step for mankind, big step for myself, though). so if you think this is a developer's issue, should i send it to anybody (mail, PM)? or find some webspace to post it? (there is no option to use an attachment in this forum, right?)

and yes, we're talking about the long range chart here :-)

The best way to post a log here is to copy from your Mac text editor and paste it into a post here on the forum (inside the [ code] [ /code] or [ quote] [ /quote] tags you see appearing as buttons along the top the window just where you're typing your posts)

The log doesn't report any problem at all.

Can you tell us on what kind of keyboard you are playing? In many countries there is no key for "\", so the ANA would use another key.

so, more confusion. meanwhile, oolite completely ignores the keyconfig.plist, (no, i did not rename it, nor move it, nor mess around with it. especially the funny brackets at the beginning and end of the list are still there.) i think i should reinstall the whole stuff, but then, how do i save my game status? (i read there was a file somewhere inside the oolite package, but could not find it yet ...)

suggestions?

thx benjie

ps. i'm playing on a macbook, and i've been trying numerous key assignments for this (ANA). none of them worked, neither in plain text nor in ascii code. other changes did work without any problems until recently.

save games should be in ~/oolite-saves or at least thats where mine are and I dont think I ever moved them. They shouldnt be impacted by removing or reinstalling oolite.

Where is the keyconfig.plist you are editing, and where oolite is installed to?

What program have you been editting the keyconfig file with? Some programs mess up the file so that Oolite can't open it.

I'm not up on the Mac, but on Windows the standard Notepad buggers it up quite often.

You can get another copy of the original keyconfig.plist file here.

i made the changes with the apple textedit app. as i mentioned before, it worked fine for some time and i was able to made the changes i wanted to. then the ANA came in and from this point on, less and less worked, and now all the changes are without effect, allthough they are still in he file and the file is were it should be (config folder).

well, i have no problem with that as i feel that computers are driven by magic or anything similar, i just want it to work

my plan: copy the savegamges (name of the commander.oolite-save) elsewhere and reinstall the whole thing. objections anyone?

but i dont expect the ANA to work then, which IS annoying.
