But back before Elite..

Almost a decade before Elite, there was this: http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9782 A vid of the gameplay can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-4LcD95AOg&feature=player_embedded I spent plenty of quarters on it back in the day. It was just what there was availabl...

Re: Power failure during upgrade

I had a computer instructor years ago who told us to lay in a bottle of champagne that cost at least 50$ and a single champagne glass that cost at least 10$. Keep them stashed somewhere, and when your hard drive finally dies in a non-recoverable sort of way you crack open the champagne and take the ...

Power failure during upgrade

Well, the title pretty much covers it. I decided to finally upgrade from Karmic to Lucid, and there was a power failure right during the part you can't cancel out of. Not like we get a lot of power failures here, so the odds were about astronomical against it being at that moment. After the power ca...

Re: Squadron Leader

I was thinking more like agreeing to sign up as a squadron leader would mean the player leaving their old ship to start in the "standard issue" provided by the Navy. Basically it would amount to the OXP dealing with it as if they bought the Python (or whatever), and the trade-in value of t...

Re: Squadron Leader

Crazy notion, but how about basing the OXP squadron aboard something that could functions somewhat like a capship? Maybe a Navy Behemoth or something that already has capability for docking. The big ship would be on a patrol that takes it from system to system, and when there's trouble (which would ...

Re: Pioneer Alpha 10 promotion :)

Well, alpha or not, the only way a game can be "judged" (if that's what we are actually doing) is by what is there and how well it works. I try not to be judgemental in a negative way about games, especially open source projects and to focus mostly on what is good about them. It's easy to ...

Re: Name that Anaconda!

I flew one for a bit a few months back, and called it "Dreamboat Annie". Trite, but oh well. Anacondas are one of the Oolite ships actually big enough to do some serious route style trading. Stop everywhere it's reasonably safe to fly and buy everything that's at a good price and sell ever...

Re: Poll: What is your Ooniverse like?

It'd make more sense if every dockable location in a system had a different market and some different ships and facilities available. Logically, each system would have a sub-economy other than the main station, and one should be able to spend a good bit of time in a single system so far as opportuni...

Re: Pioneer Alpha 10 promotion :)

The 50 km planets look big enough when you're coming in for a landing on them. "Big compared to you" is all that's really needed, and we have that. The Planetfall OXP works well enough in Oolite, at least if you assume that the moment of landing is actually more when you would go atmospher...

Re: Weird nugget of info about the Thargoids...

I somehow never heard of it.. But there are some Captain Kremmen episodes up on youtube.

Maybe the insectoid appearance is actually due to technorganic battle suits and the real Thargoids remain hidden away from sight.

Re: Poll: What is your Ooniverse like?

Yeah, I'd say "Dangerous" to survive long in a Cobra MKIII, anyway. "Dangerous" to "Deadly". The NPCs have shields and there's some OXPs that up the action and add some bigger meaner ships. I suppose that less than "Dangerous" could manage ok, if they stuck to...

Re: Split: Install version 1.75.2 - why it is good

I'm not usually one of the first people to update, either, lave. I tend to many of the same worries. What if the game just doesn't fly the same after a change and all your practice in getting good at certain moves suddenly becomes nothing but newbie flailing again? What if an OXP isn't supported and...

Re: Do you use docking computer?

I use the docking computer because the Fast Docking saves a lot of time and palaver after fighting my way as far as the station aegis. It saves time as the player perceives it, but it still takes time so far as your ship's clock is concerned, so manual docking can be better when you're doing a long...

Re: Screenshots

Things do change over time, including things likely to cause social outrage. So far as we know, Us Arse may be the name of a famous rap singer in that period. He may be showing up loaded down with priceless petroleum-based plastic jewelry, outlandish garb and just trying to get to his next show. Con...
