did the Frontier games do an early version of this polygon subdivision for the planets or am i remembering incorrectly? it could have just been early texture mapping going wonky and different levels of detail models popping in suddenly when approaching a planet that make me think it was subdividing...

This is due to the random number generator which for the Elite seed choice leaves Galaxy 4 with missing government types. Other seed choices could have left Elite's set of 8 galaxies with even more missing government types, and/or unaesthetic system clustering. So we can enjoy Galaxy 4's 'features' ...

yep I have wondered the same thing in the past. It would also explain why ships fly around ~ 3 times slower than the original BBC game. The only question left is whether a space station is supposed to be 1km in size, I think it is, but then that makes docking too easy?
