I've just read that .mesh is file format for Meshwork, which is MacOS 3d software. So to precise 3rd question, how can I open these files if I am not using MacOS?
Also, which of all these files are most up to date and are used in game?

Hi, I have question regarding Dat2Obj.py and Dat2ObjTex.py: I have converted oolite_cobra3.dat and .obj model had 0 verticies. After that I've tried both cobra1_redux.dat and cobra3_redux.dat. The great thing about Oolite compared to ED is you can configure Oolite the way you want to play it. Simply by enabling expansions, making your own or joining the development of core game.

I would love to see a 3D cockpit as well, but I wonder how that would work with the current four laser mount positions that we have. I understand, thanks for clearing these few things. I think making cockpit within ship model will be even more problematic as to do this upgrading each ship would be necessary. Additionally this would decrease performance, does the game use LOD? I want to do instead a single cockpit which would work...
