Re: Do You Ever Have This Problem?

Aye, it was one of the best grammar schools in SE England at the time (measured by number of pupils gaining places at Oxbridge) That sounds scarily like Hastings Grammar (and the comments about 'Masters'), before it's lobotomy. I'll second the 'teach yourself something' approach, even in a good sch...

Re: Empty polling station - UK election 2015

And Democracies? There's never been one The original (and the best) was. The Greek system of policy making and white ball/black ball (for all but slaves) was as fair as it gets. Only undone when faced with War and the whole shooting match was handed over to their Admiral. As for the expense and not...

Re: ms Vista effects on Oolite

Win8 takes getting used to, just think 'tablet' and 'your mouse is your finger'. Works better if you have it across the range (I've got it on my phone and my various windows machines.

Re: Choosing an OS

Well if the manufacturer thinks it's a good idea to knobble the customer machine for the sake of some kind of in-game integrity (and assuming there is no pecuniary advantage) then I'd complain and ask for a version that didn't have it. It's like those very annoying 'FACT' anti-piracy non-skippable i...

Re: Choosing an OS

Have to agree here to a certain point. There are some good 'gamers' applications which try to identify unnecessary 'services' et al. I think the one I use is called Game on or something. It allows me to 'add' to the list of undesirables and kills them before any sessions, or running any other demand...

Re: Crux of choosing an OS

I'd love to see some figures to back that claim up. IMO, neither the Archimedes hardware, nor the typically available bandwidth in 1995, could even come close to coping with HD. Well I had a 400x300 256 colour video of the original Thunderbirds 2 countdown running from a 1.8M (3.5 inch floppy) on m...

Re: Crux of choosing an OS

I see these arguments time and again. I repeat: GET A RASPBERRY PI and try them all (except Windows, but you know that already right?). Don't overlook the fact that if you buy into Windows/Linux/Mac (aka Linux) you are buying into (American) standards that are 20+ years old, and they are still crap....

Re: Crux of choosing an OS

Well I know those intimately. And the 7" Grandaddy. And the various tape interfaces that came before. What you after? If you want a modern OS that wouldn't have issues with the above have a look at Risc OS on a raspberry (or better still on one of the native Risc OS machines). They come with a ...

What might be nice is if you could configure where the savefile is stored from the UI. I would put mine on my one drive (cloud storage).

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous

I asked my missus to get me the game for xmas, I don't know what she went for (I'm thinking that she went for the downloadable version as this is more prominent on the site) but she said she was worried that she'd not heard anything from E:D, has anyone bought either the downloadable or the disk 'up...

Re: Quote of the week!

IBM's answer to COBOL was RPG, and is still in use and there are plenty of people still programming in it. Can't remember when it started but was in the 70's it came to the fore. Some nice features of the IBM mid-range machines. Th OS for example is basically SQL based.

Re: i5 or i7 Quad Core Processor?

If you live in the UK go to Tescos for free eye test (no obligation) then Asda for the specs. They were doing 2 for £140 last time I went (cheaper if you didn't want Designer or frameless), and I got a frameless with vari-focal lenses + sunglasses also varifocal and frameless.

Re: Greetings!

In the original game most profit to be made involved buying as much food as you could afford on one of the planets near to Lave, then buying as much machinery as possible to trade back. Once you got to a full load of Wine and Computers you would be making a fair crack, so it was time to start beefin...
