Noobi question - About maintenance
Is it better to perform a maintenance on a higher TL-level?
And... is there a lowest TL-level one can perform a maintenance?

Hi greenseng,
and welcome to the friendliest board this side of Riedquat.
I don't know if it's an Urban Myth but I have heard that higher techs do a better job. I always try to use them, say TL 12 and over.

Hi greenseng and welcome... the Oolite reference sheet pdf, found in the main Oolite folder, contains much useful info.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Now, about this urban legend. Do the level 12+ techs do the job cheaper or do they do the job with better quality with the result of not needing maintenance as often? Seriously, I'm just trying to further my education and pocketbook in the ooniverse...spend the extra money on coffee!
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

Tried TL 10 and was rather disappointed. Suddenly my ship was not worth as much as before.
Riedquat? Isn't that the place where they have this dirty Civil War? But... very good food there!

Tried that one. Should have read it a little more closer before.
I have a Military Shield Enhancement which can be found at TL 14. Guess that means that I should do my maintenance at TL 14 or 15.
But those levels are rather rare. Hmm...

An old pilot's advice... take an overhaul whenever, or wherever, it's offered.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

If you buy a Ferrari you don't have it serviced at Kwik-Fit...greenseng wrote:El Viejo wrote:Hi greenseng and welcome... the Oolite reference sheet pdf, found in the main Oolite folder, contains much useful info.

Coffee is great! Espresso or Cappuccino ( or how they now spell it ). But wonder about one thing here.
Sometimes a ship is rather much expensive in its raw state. More expensive then other similar ships.
But no goodies in it at all.
Maybe it is brand new directly from the company. While the other ships are already used ships.
That would maybe have the effect that it doesn't have to have maintenance so often in the beginning.
When a ship becomes very used it maybe needs maintenance more often.
Doesn't really know here. But maybe a possibility. Oolite is much, much more advanced than its father - Elite.

Oh yes indeed... but it retains the essence and magic of the original.greenseng wrote:Oolite is much, much more advanced than its father - Elite.

Re: Noobi question - About maintenance
I think the price of a ship in a shipyard is also influenced by the native level of the ship (i.e. what it comes with as standard) and the tech of the system it is being sold in.

There is probably something in this advice.
It is probably not so good if the ship breaks down when looking at a really highlevel station. Specially if you have made a lot of jumps with it when in need of maintenance.

Welcome Greenseng!
DaddyHoggy, what's a Kwik-Fit? Is that like an oil change place?
Ferrari's come with their own mechanic. Why can't my ship? OXP request Onboard Ship's Mechanic!
Eliminates 9 out of 10 maintenance overhauls and is maybe 30% of the cost it would have been even with a wage deducted every game week automatically or he walks. Instead the onboard ship's mechanic requests that you buy alloys, machinery, computers, precious metals, etc.(Even food, liquor, narcotics and luxuries for the odd party for him.) He converts that to fixing the ship and the extra bonus is that if you have damage to ship's equipment he can start repairs to them using these raw materials immediately if you have them. Or if it's really(rarely)bad he can say"No, need some drydock time boss!" and a station visit is now top priority. Freelance pirates can stay in the spacelanes almost indefinately living and repairing off of the take!
EDIT: (After reading DH explanation of Kwik-Fit) That's a great idea, crooked mechanics that totally rip you off and do a poor job and then you have to fire them!(small% chance) Just Brilliant!

The kind of company that offers you a service for £30 and then tells you there's a hundred things wrong with your car that will cause it to crash/explode the moment you drive it off their forecourt if you don't hand over hundreds of pounds immediately to have it all fixed...

I first tasted Elite on a ZX Sinclair Spectrum. 48 kB ram with 8 kB used for graphic and channels. So a programmer had only 40 kB to play with.
Still don't understand how they managed to put a game like Elite into such a machine. The first 3D at least for Spectrum.
Many people thought it was impossible to make 3D for such a device.
I was stunned at this game. Today they have access to such Graphic and Sounds. Still they are not even close.
Think it has to do with fantasy. The game allows something like a movie in your head. It doesn't put limitations for the fantasy.
I think a good book works in the same way. It doesn't limit the cognitive processes.
And this makes Oolite the perfect game.
