Another scanner idea - 'cause sometimes I can be a vindictive bastard and if an NPC ship turns hostile against me, that's grounds for execution, regardless of whether they give up or not.
So...sometimes you will come up against a pirate or hostile that decides you're too much trouble and breaks missle lock (or whatever) and their lollypop in the scanner goes from red to yellow.
I'd like to see ships of that sort still be marked as 'recently hostile', say using a pink lollypop, so I can see who I need to take revenge on.
On second thoughts, to make this more universal (so you can ID hostile cops), make the lollypop flash pink and whatever the default colour should be e.g. pink/purple, pink/yellow etc

Re: Recently known hostiles
I'm not certain what currently causes the lollipop to go from red to yellow. Probably the red colour is only linked to the ship targeting you. If I'm not mistaken, even fleeing ships (there's no greater breaking up than fleeing from you) keep being marked red. I think only when they have reached a safe distance they turn yellow again (and as soon as you're pursuing them and closing in, they turn red once more).
So, something of your suggestion may already be the state of how things work. But, as said before, I don't know the exact mechanism.
