Texturing Suns

Post by Gibbon »

A thousand pardons if this has been mentioned but is it possible to texture suns? I've only recently discovered Oolite and have lots of oxp's added which greatly enhance the vibe. That said, only thing that really annoys me are the suns, just white discs. Just like the planets have been re-textured, would it not be possible to do the suns as well?

I'm no expert on this, but as far as I know the suns are just flat discs, the only 2D objects in Oolite. They are coloured a bit, though, and there may be a way of enhancing the colours but you'll need someone a bit more knowledgeable than me to tell you how.
Just a thought, but suns don't really have much 'texture' anyway, do they? At least not the way we (or our scanners) see them.

Smivs is right… suns are variously coloured a little, but it can be hard to notice. I didn’t think they were at first… then my GPU woke-up with some updated drivers, and now it’s quite apparent.

A 'blue' sun:

Thanks for the info guys. I actually mod for another game where it's doable which is why i was asking if it's the same with Oolite. Suns most definately have textures, here's a taste of what's possible:

My point is that if the suns were like the planets then results like in some of the images above would be possible, but if they are 2D then i think the answer is no.

Yeah… but those SOHO pictures are taken in the extreme UV, I think, or using false-colour.

But wouldn't it be possible to create a really large extra planet and texture it like those SOHO pictures to create what looks like a binary system? And did I read recently that it will soon be possible to add glows to planets too?
