I'd like the keybindings to be like in the original Elite, with +/- for speed and a/z for up and down, and so on. Does Oolite have customizable keys? A good measure would be to include such customization in the options menu, it's not like it's hard to do, if you've coded the keyboard input routine well in the first place... I've never hardcoded keys, well, for 20 years now, one of the reasons my C64 games sucked... great customizability, but no memory left for the game. I did it by the book of user-friendliness, not good game. But the best of games always include customization of keys.
Jumping into the game was really hard when you can't use the keys you've always used in Elite. Thankfully it works now, some years before I never could get Oolite to work on my Windows machine, thanks!

Edit:
Formalities... Sheesh...
Welcome to the friendliest forums this side of Reidquat!
Also, what I did was made a folder called "Personal_Custom_Keys.oxp" inside my add-ons folder of Oolite. I then placed a copy of the keyconfig.plist file in there, and modified it. That way I always I have the original to fall back on, and I can move it to each new install easily enough. Got the advice from these very forums....

Thanks.
But still my suggestion for in-game keyboard configuration stands. It's much more user-friendly. The default keys aren't for everybody you know, especially in an Elite game like this. Atleast to have a choice of "classic" and "Oolite" keys would be nice.
Sorry for the "noob" question, I just downloaded the new Oolite version, it never worked on my machine the first I read about it years back.

Oh, and I forgot about the other gripe or suggestion as you call it, the jump drive within a system is called hyperspeed but still works from the j key, and hyperspace is called witchspace (I thought it was only when you get a misjump, with Thargoids on your ass). I don't mind actually, but Elite called those jump drive and hyperspace. While the terms are a bit more accurate, why use the keys then, while not using other classic keys?
Sorry, I'm on a roll. I know in the novella witchspace was used as a synonym of hyperspace, but hyperspeed? Jump drive in Elite is mass locked, so that means it is a relativistic way of warping space and time, there's no clock in Elite telling you how much time has passed. In Frontier and in First Encounters Braben used a Newtonian engine, still not realistic enough at the relativistic accelerations and speeds the spacecraft achieved.
Only space simulation I've ever played that used realistic (Einsteinian) calculations was Microsoft Space Simulator back in 1995, and of course Damocles (Mercenary II) and Mercenary III.
If you happen to be on OS X: There is a keymapper for Oolite in the Mac section on this very forum (see sticky threads).
And welcome to the boards and the game!
I have no machine running OSX at the moment, just a desktop machine and as portable an EeePC netbook, both running XP SP3. But I did change the keys for Oolite as per last reply, and now it's much more playable.
