Miltary Laser Cooler equipment idea
I'm not sure if something like this has already been done, but I have a suggestion for a new piece of equipment: a Military Laser Cooler.
It has obvious advantages but to prevent uber-weapon syndrome, I thought of some set backs.
The Military Laser Cooler kicks in when the Military Laser overheats and allows a little extra additional shooting time. However this is done by draining energy banks like the ECM. There needs to be a greater setback than this though, so I thought that it might be that it prevents fitting of a large cargo bay as it takes the space the bay would have taken, or perhaps it just takes a chunk of cargo space. It can only be fitted to one laser, is very expensive and only available at very high tech worlds or possibly only via the Navy somehow.
[EDIT: I noticed that the idea has been suggested before although not with the setbacks]

And again, another follower asks, "can I have a laser cooler?"
And the collective mass of we've been here before rise up and with one voice declare: "No! Learn to shoot better!"
(however, this is one of the better suggestions along this theme)

The Military Laser is a powerful weapon, and a rapid overheat is its one drawback.
Fire it in quick bursts, and try to fire it when your aim is on target.
In other words, yes, learn to shoot better.
You may find that a laser cooler isn't really all that necessary.

Running Oolite buttery smooth & rock stable w/ tons of eyecandy oxps on:
ASUS Prime X370-A
Ryzen 5 1500X
16GB DDR4 3200MHZ
128GB NVMe M.2 SSD (Boot drive)
1TB Hybrid HDD (For software and games)
EVGA GTX-1070 SC
1080P Samsung large screen monitor

I've been playing with a non-linear sensitivity on the XBox 360 controller axis using xboxdrv (I don't use the Oolite built in button mapping to double sensitivity).
However, when targets are far away, I still find that v small stick movement produces 0 movement then on increasing the deflection of the stick slightly, there will at some point be a sudden jump not the gradual increase I'm looking for. I'm not sure if this is a product of the stick or Oolite, but I'll keep experimenting.
I notice OXP authors have invented a myriad of new missiles, mines and so forth, but there isn't so much innovation around the primary laser weapon. I agree that a laser cooler is not necessary, but following the same logic, one could argue that all these new missiles are not needed either. It's just an idea for an expansion.

Laser weaponry can't be coded in an OXP, that's whymcarans wrote:I notice OXP authors have invented a myriad of new missiles, mines and so forth, but there isn't so much innovation around the primary laser weapon. You can always recompile Oolite after changing every single laser attribute: range, price, damage caused, power drain, overheating factor... You don't need to buy a dongle anymore!
Hey, free OXPs: farsun v1.05 & tty v0.5! :0)

And you've already got your first bug report!maik wrote:There you go, my very first OXP: BeerCooler1.0ClymAngus wrote:Can I have a beer cooler?
The file "Equipment.plist" doesn't get recognized on case-sensitive systems like Linux. It should be called "equipment.plist", with a lower-case "e".
After I renamed the file, of course I bought one. What commander doesn't want to keep his/her beer cool?!

Second bug report, I'm afraid.
The first link just took me to a page telling me to use another browser and the second takes me to what amounts to a blank page...
Where's my Beer Cooler?
