Animated Ships

Post by Thargoid »

As a few of you already know, I've been playing around of late with some new ideas. One of them is what can be done with more animated ships (without the aid of shaders in my case).

First example of that was my Stellar Serpents OXP, but now I've got another little demo, in this case one that adds some butterflies to the game. Not quite in keeping I know, but they look nice with their flapping wings.

So I thought I'd offer the demo OXP as a showcase of what can be done, and perhaps as encouragement to anyone else who might feel like playing around with the idea. Examples could be X-Wing style attack foils, ships which react to things like high temperature or low energy by changing shape or indeed all sorts of other stuff.

Anyway enough waffle, for those who would like it, the butterflies OXP is here.

Note this is a slightly tidied-up version of the one I posted into the wasps thread yesterday, as the model there had a couple of rough edges I wasn't so happy with so I've re-mapped it. Plus I thought it should have its own thread rather than tagging along in KW's.

A big carrier-type ship could have a clam-shell door to its hanger bay.
It'd open quickly, launch/receive a ship, and then close.
That'd at least make it harder for the player to sneak in.

Cor, we could have ships that close up when attacked! (A bit like the solar collectors in Total Annihilation used to do)

There's a link in the first post of this thread (or just click >>> here <<<).

Both butterflies and goliath are also now linked from my wiki page, under the demo OXPs category. But as they are just demos at the moment I don't want them to have full wiki pages.

Single ones have a trader role at 0.1 weighting, and swarms at 0.02. Just be patient, they should appear eventually. But as they are unarmed and not the strongest (by design both) they won't last long against any pirates who may be around...

After several games looking for them, finally did.
