Post by masona2 »

And when I run the game nothing happens.

What have I done wrong?

You haven't decompressed it (tar is a compressed file - a tape archive to be historically exact).

You'll need a suitable application to decompress it. That should yield the .oxp folder (plus maybe some other stuff like documentation) that is what you need to put in the AddOns folder.

"tar" is an archive format (like zip).

So you have to unpack it first, before you get the actual OXP, which you then have to put into your AddOns-folder.

EDIT: Thargoid got there first.

Im going to stick my neck out and say tar is not compressed, it is rather concatenated. Thats why unix tends to have <whatever>.tar.gz where tar creates a single file, and gzip compresses it.

nitpick over :p

You are indeed most correct - I'm too used to seeing .tgz and extrapolating. Would be rather hard to compress a file on a tape ;)

I've tried opening the app, but I get the message

Windows cannot open this file.

Running on XP.

You need to install a suitable program to deal with it.

Personally I'd recommend 7-zip. It's free and can cope with TAR (amongst others).

You need some software to unpack the package. Have a look over at google, or search here on the boards, where other people have been given recommendations before.

EDIT: ninja'd again!

You'll have to do it twice (one time for the .gz and another time for the .tar). Right click should give you the extraction options from 7-zip. If right click does not work - open 7-zip and browse to that file and extract it.

Once you've installed the program (assuming you understand how to download it and installed it), you should be able to Right-Click on a RAR, TAR or GZ file and get a popup menu. In that menu you should find a submenu for 7-Zip, inside of which you can Open Archive, Extract Files, etc etc.

Hope that makes it a bit clearer?

EDIT: If not here is a screendump illustrating the above:

OK

JazHaz, followed your very helpful instructions as above, extracted the file using 7zip, but the extracted file still ends in 'tar'.

So I right clicked on the original file again and the 7zip app gives the option to Extract to "neolite.oxp.tar\".

Any ideas?

Yes, do that, then rename it to neolite.oxp (cut of the .tar)

Hooray!

Went to my C drive, Oolite Addons, clicked rename, deleted '.tar' and the second I hit enter my computer extracted all the ships from the file!

Loaded the game and bingo! Shiny new looking Cobra mark III on the load new commander screen. Looks great.

Thank you everyone for helping this lowly computer ignoramus get even more enjoyment from the game.
